Renewable energy projects, protected areas and recycling: #NovaScotia

Wind Energy

To ensure a more diverse energy mix, Nova Scotia Power and the municipal electric utilities must have 25% renewables in their mix by 2015 and 40% by 2020.
We are well on the path to /1
meeting those requirements, and wind will play a major role as projects already approved will reach the technical limit of 500 megawatts around 2015.
Federal regulations establish a requirement for coal-fired units to meet specific emissions standards or /2
shut down at the end of their useful life.

Tidal Energy

To develop the Bay of Fundy’s resource, the Province of Nova Scotia has taken a number of strategic actions: • Supporting the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE) /3
Continuing research on engineering, scientific, environmental and socio-economic aspects of tidal energy, and activities of the Fundy Energy Research Network (FERN) and the Offshore Energy Research Association (OERA) • /4
Developed the Marine Renewable Energy Strategy, establishing the Marine Renewable-energy Act and created feed-in tariffs for large and small-scale projects • Supporting and encouraging opportunities for our Nova Scotia supply chain • /5
Developed a Statement of Best Practices for In-Stream Tidal Energy Development and Operation.

Nova Scotia has permitted five participants to test commercial-scale devices at FORCE: • Minas Energy • Black Rock Tidal Power (Schottel Hydro, Tidal Stream, local and national /6
partners) • Atlantis Operations Canada, with DP Energy, Lockheed Martin, and Irving Shipbuilding • Cape Sharp Tidal Venture (OpenHydro and Emera) • DP Marine Energy. /7
Hydroelectric Power

The Maritime Link, an overland and subsea transmission cable, will give Nova Scotia access to hydroelectric power from the Lower Churchill Hydroelectric Project. This connection will provide Nova Scotia with a minimum of 900 gigawatt hours /8
(GWh) of electricity per year as part of the base energy block. It is anticipated that this Link will also deliver an additional 1,200 to 2,000 GWh per year of electricity that will be available at competitive market-based pricing. When combined, this represents 8% to 20% /9
of the province's electricity needs. The Maritime Link will also create a second interconnection point to the North American grid, increasing reliability by establishing an electrical loop. The first power from the project is started in 2017. /10
Solar Energy

Nova Scotia is leading the country in greenhouse gas reductions and is on its way to a cleaner energy future. Innovation and the addition of more diverse forms of renewable energy to our energy mix is an essential part of continuing to make this shift. /11
The Solar for Community Buildings Pilot Program is designed to allow participation by Municipalities, Mi’kmaq Bands, Academic Institutions and Non-profits in the installation of solar panels for electricity generation on, and around, suitable buildings. /12
The Solar Homes Program will provide a rebate to Nova Scotian homeowners who install eligible solar projects. The rebate will make solar more affordable and save Nova Scotians money on their electricity bills. /13
Energy Storage

There are many storage and reconversion options available for electricity. These include:
electrochemical —conventional batteries (lead acid, lithium ion, and others), flow batteries
chemical—hydrogen storage and fuel cell systems
electrical—/14
large capacitors, which hold an electrical charge for later use
mechanical
Flywheel—energy is stored in rotating mass and quickly released back to the grid when needed
Compressed air energy systems—air is compressed and stored, then later released to turn a turbine that /15
produces electricity
Pumped-hydro storage—water is pumped to a higher elevation and stored in a hydro reservoir
Hydroelectric systems that include large dams where water can be trapped and stored until it is needed
thermal—electric thermal storage units, phase change /16
materials, underground seasonal thermal storage systems, district heating, and hot water storage tanks. /17

Nature Reserves and Protected areas in Nova Scotia:

Nature reserves are areas selected to preserve and protect, in perpetuity, representative (typical) and special natural ecosystems, plant and animal species, features and natural processes. Scientific research and /1
education are the primary uses of nature reserves and recreation is generally restricted.
Nature Reserves are established to:
provide areas suitable for scientific research and education; protect representative examples of natural ecosystems; provide examples of /2
ecosystems that have been modified by humans and offer an opportunity to study the natural recovery of ecosystems from modification; protect rare or endangered native plants or animals in their natural habitats; and
provide educational or research field areas. /3

Information on extended CERB and EI in Canada from today's media presser: (thread)

The new plan released Thursday details how most people will be transitioned onto EI, though three new temporary benefits are also being established, including a form of paid sick leave. /1
In total, these new financial assistance plans are budgeted to cost at least $37 billion over the next year.

While CERB was set to run out at the start of the month for those who have been on the program from the outset, the government is extending the program by an /2
additional four weeks, to a maximum of 28 weeks. Then, as of Sept. 27, almost all CERB claimants who qualify for Employment Insurance will be transitioned onto that program as their avenue for support once their 28 weeks of CERB run out. /3
