The UK has just 25 statues to women who were not Queens or Princesses. A staggering statistic. And now the government is seeking to erect 1,700 new statues to (mostly male) war heroes reducing the ratio even further.
theguardian.com/culture/2021/f…
That would mean that just 1.5% of British statues would be to women.
This seems to be an initiative of the "Common Sense Group". That curious band of Tory MPs who have nothing better to do with their time than lament the passing of Victor Comic Britain
Less the Band of Brothers more the Band of Bozos

Me for Byline Times on the government's war on woke and the great "free speech paradox." And more - why we should be worried.
bylinetimes.com/2021/02/17/the…
Written yesterday before a great debate descended into my timeline.
As I keep stressing I think the government's target is control of history, control of the narrative and division. They need a new front. I accept other aspects are at play.

Can you please give us solid examples of where free speech has been curtailed.

You mention "an increased number of individuals being silenced" but I cannot find a single one. Thank you.
It's a real request @GavinWilliamson - I've written a piece on this for @bylinetimes and it's out tomorrow. I can find not a single example of free speech being curtailed. Can you please give us solid examples
In fact just one example is good

I watched the 1974 remake of Brief Encounter today. It's just as good as the original, only without the warmth, direction, cinematography, Celia Howard, Rachmaninoff, claustrophobia and beauty of the original.
In one memorable sequence, Sophia Loren gets off a train onto a platform marked "Winchester" and then is seen leaving the station with the word Brockenhurst over the exit.
I've put "Celia Howard" there because my brain now hurts

It's the 50th anniversary of the introduction of decimalisation and already people are lamenting its loss and seeking its return.

Here's the clearest explanation you'll ever see of how the system worked.
It's satire but it demonstrates how far we've come that it's likely people believe this nonsense
I did read this over the weekend. In short, Simon Heffer was angry because decimalisation stopped him using pre 1971 idioms.

Academics debating history. Where will it all end? Image
Nigel's angry too. He's watched The Eagle has Landed 14 times and knows that Winston Churchill dodged Michael Caine by using a body double. Image

‘Covid denier’ Gary Matthews dies from virus day after testing positive. He didn't wear a mask, or take precautions and continued to meet friends after falling for conspiracy theories online. A victim of the anti-mask, anti-lockdown brigade.
standard.co.uk/news/uk/covid-…
Gary isn't the first or last person in history who has fallen prey to conspiracy theories, propagated by "smart people" or well known names. Hitchens and Hartley-Brewer and co are well known and erudite people. By endorsing this stuff they have justified it for many.
But of course they'll never accept they're wrong. There will be a lot of other Garys.
