Justice Rosalie Abella’s retirement will leave a huge hole on the #SCC bench. Her judicial expertise is broad and deep, her energy endless, and she’s the most fun in court. She treats counsel respectfully as she leads them to through their own logical unthought-of conclusions. 1/
When Abella joined the top court, sworn in at the same time as Louise Charron, it was a ceremony like/unlike, any other. “They. Are. Women.” That’s how then-chief justice McLachlin marked their arrival. Beyond women, they were badass judges. Abella lasted well after Charron. 2/
There’ll be lots of time for analysis of her judicial legacy, but her 1983 royal commission work on employment equity broke ground and shaped workplaces and Canadian equality law even today.
Trudeau will find a new judge to take Abella’s seat, but good luck finding a replacement. 4/4

Trudeau’s closing news conference at NATO summit has started. Trump has cancelled his newser after calling Trudeau “two-faced” for the candid mocking comments caught on camera. Trump says Trudeau wasn’t happy he “called out” Trudeau on low defence spending.
Trudeau’s opening statement says 6 additional fighter aircraft and a frigate to NATO’s “readiness” mission.
He hasn’t yet taken questions.
Trudeau on his comments and what he said to Trump today: We had a great meeting yesterday, talked about things that really matter to Canadians..NAFTA, China
last night I made a reference to the fact that there was an unscheduled press conference...it was certainly notable.
Trudeau has emerged, is now speaking, but is talking more frankly about how he "didn't understand the racist history of blackface"...so he has now articulated the word blackface, not "makeup".. and racist in the same sentence.
Trudeau says it is never acceptable to darken one's face.
First q about how many times has he darkened his skin with makeup?
Trudeau says he "shared the moments that I recollected."
says he now "appreciates calling it makeup, it was blackface. it was not right."
Trudeau says he did not see the truth of how racist it was "because of the layers of privilege" he comes from, and now realizes it will never be acceptable to wear blackface when there are people out there who live every day confront racism.
Trudeau starts the day at a Victoria construction site with a promise to expand the first time homebuyers incentive and a nationally applied speculation tax on non-resident real estate owners. Story to come. #elxn43
The speculation tax will be one per cent, but won’t apply to non-resident Canadian citizens who have property in Canada but aren’t currently living here.
Trudeau has shrugged off not going to tonight’s debate. Says he looks forward to three other debates later in the campaign.
