Trudeau starts the day at a Victoria construction site with a promise to expand the first time homebuyers incentive and a nationally applied speculation tax on non-resident real estate owners. Story to come. #elxn43
The speculation tax will be one per cent, but won’t apply to non-resident Canadian citizens who have property in Canada but aren’t currently living here.
Trudeau has shrugged off not going to tonight’s debate. Says he looks forward to three other debates later in the campaign.
Trudeau repeats that his personal view on abortion (opposed) does not affect his public policy view, that women’s rights and choice are protected, and that Canadians should know where leaders’ stand.
On assisted dying,Trudeau addresses the QCcourt ruling, saying fed Govt must balance competing interests. Says he will review judgment, always knew the debate would evolve, but does not commit to changing the law to extend medical assistance to those who are not terminally ill.
On Philpott and JWR demands for expanded waiver to talk to RCMP about SNC-Lavalin, Trudeau reverts to his talking point he already gave the necessary waiver. Won’t go further.
On why he says he respects public servants’ decisions but not the director of public prosecutions, Trudeau falls back on claim his responsibility is to protect jobs.
Trudeau also not varying from his answer on Bill21, the religious symbol ban in QC for public servants. Says he’ll defend rights but it’s counterproductive for federal Govt to intervene at this time that “could be perceived as a cavalier manner”..
Trudeau refers to Health Canada on vaping concerns.
And pushes back at a q why he waited to help homebuyers until election, says he acted in the budget, and recognized that in areas of Victoria, VCR and GTA there is a need for extra help.
On Trudeau’s just announced “modest” non-resident real estate tax, he says even a modest tax in BC had an effect in Vancouver and pushed the problem elsewhere so there was a need for a nationally applied measure.
Trudeau doesn’t really answer what parts of Vancouver Island he believes Liberals can gain, cites govt’s environmental record...in answer to both questions about how he appeals to voters here, esp on their pipeline concerns.
Trudeau: Pipeline’s are safest way to transport oil, and developing resources best way to raise $$for clean tech.
About that housing incentive or the new tax (which also won’t apply to non-Canadians living here), Liberals have not yet said how much a cost for those promises, saying it il will be provided in the course of the campaign.
