How did capitalism lead to the #TexasFreeze? When we privatize our grid (or rely on investor-owned utilities, like DTE here in A2) the first priority is always to maximize shareholder profits - not to help residents afford electric bills or stay safe in weather emergencies.
Anyone else remember when, last year, @DTE_Energy told us to take steps to reduce our energy consumption - including turning the thermostat - when temperatures were -5 with windchills at minus 40? #LetsOwnDTE #FossilFuelFreeze
SOLUTIONS: A federally owned supergrid, publicly owned democratically controlled utilities that are directly accountable to the people they serve, ending shutoffs for non-payment, ending environmental racism, 100% clean, renewable, affordable energy, and improved grid resilience.
Here in A2, our investor-owned utility has not kept up infrastructure well, because it's not profitable for them to do so. This is WHY we need #PublicPower and utilities that work for US by investing in maintenance and upgrades to keep the light and heat on!
