1000 Jewish children from Poland have arrived in Palestine, after an arduous journey via Egypt, Iran, & the USSR. Children, many orphans, are among survivors of 10,000s of Poles who fled Nazi invasion & were imprisoned by Soviets: yadvashem.org/yv/en/exhibiti…
When Polish refugees arrived in USSR, thousands were sent to internal exile or gulags as "politically unreliable"; since Soviets joined the Allies, 77,000 Polish troops & 41,000 civilians have been allowed to leave, via Iran.
"Ander's Army"- named for its commander Gen. Władysław Anders- is made of Polish volunteers, most formerly held in Soviet prisoner-of-war camps after Red Army invaded Poland in 1939. They & their families have finally escaped Soviet control.

In Leningrad, Soviet scientists of the Institute of Plant Industry protect one of world's largest seed banks. At least 12 staff have starved to death while guarding a vast collection of edible plants.
The Institute's peanut expert died at his desk, surrounded by stored peanuts. No researcher is allowed to be unaccompanied, less hunger get the better of them.
Institute's founder, Nikolai Vavilov, is not in Leningrad. He has been arrested by NKVD & sentenced to 20 years in prison, for the crime of supporting Darwinian evolutionary theory, rather than Stalin's pet theories of genetics.

Refugee ship Struma is floating helplessly in the Black Sea, crammed with 769 Jewish passengers fleeing fascist Romania. British govt. in Palestine refused to allow them to land, fearing to encourage more Jewish immigration, & Turkish authorities set the ship adrift.
Colossal explosion wracks the hideously overcrowded MV Struma- Soviet submarine Щ-213 has torpedoed the stricken refugee ship, following orders to sink any neutral vessels in Black Sea.
Struma sinking is the worst civilian naval disaster yet. Perhaps 100 of the almost 800 aboard survive the torpedo, floating in freezing waters of the Black Sea. By time rescuers arrive, just one is left alive: 19-year-old refugee David Stoliar.

For the first time, Germans are fighting the Red Army's central Asian troops: 44th Mongolian Cavalry Division from Tashkent. They've been ordered to conduct a cavalry charge on German artillery, across an open plain.
One German artilleryman: "An indescribably beautiful sight- on this clear, sunny winterscape, stirrup to stirrup, the cavalry raced with flashing sabres."
German artillery is smashing Soviet cavalry apart- flesh & blood of men & horses is spraying across snowy field. Panicking, riderless mounts running wild.

President Roosevelt reveals a "secret Nazi map" to USA, showing Hitler's plan to divide South America into Reich protectorates:
Roosevelt claims "Nazis plan to abolish all existing religions- Protestant, Catholic, Mohammedan, Hindu, Buddhist; replaced with a Swastika & a naked sword."

Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS, is touring the German-controlled USSR, viewing Nazi efforts to eliminate "subhumans". He's asked to see his first "shooting operation". Image
For Himmler's inspection, SS Einsatzgruppe B pick 100 Jews from Minsk to be shot. Among them, Himmler spots a young blond boy. Himmler: "Are you sure you're a Jew?" Boy: "Yes." "You have no Aryan ancestors?" "No." "Then I can't help- I did all I could." All shot.

High-altitude reconnaissance Spitfire has spotted German "pocket battleship" Bismarck in the North Sea- Royal Navy now scrambling all available warships to find & sink her.
Two of the British warships hunting German battleship Bismarck has spotted their target off the coast of Iceland. HMS Hood & HMS Prince of Wales are moving in to attack.
Battlecruiser HMS Hood is the largest, heaviest warship in the world, & HMS Prince George is newly-commissioned battleship- so new she still has shipyard crew working below decks.
