For the first time, Germans are fighting the Red Army's central Asian troops: 44th Mongolian Cavalry Division from Tashkent. They've been ordered to conduct a cavalry charge on German artillery, across an open plain.
One German artilleryman: "An indescribably beautiful sight- on this clear, sunny winterscape, stirrup to stirrup, the cavalry raced with flashing sabres."
German artillery is smashing Soviet cavalry apart- flesh & blood of men & horses is spraying across snowy field. Panicking, riderless mounts running wild.
After trying a second, equally futile charge, 300+ Red Army cavalrymen & horses lie dead- not a single one reached the German lines.
