1. In Hawaii if you're lucky you get to go to one of the top prep schools because you're wealthy. If you smart you may get to go to one when they increase the class size in seventh grade. People try to get their kids in. We did with our boys.
2. I remember the day I took my son for his interview at Punahou, @BarackObama was one of the rare lucky ones who wasn't rich but went there for his entire pre-college education. There are few Black teachers there. One was a well-respected teacher of Hawaiian related courses.
3. He was the person doing the interviews. They first took your kid to a room where they were given an essay to write while they observed. Made sure it was all their work. Then we sat as every other kid went into the room with their parents to meet the interviewer. We were last.
4. As I got up with my son to go into the room the interviewer stopped me and said just my son. The people helping organize the process gave me a "that's odd" look and my son entered the room. About 20 minutes later he appeared.

5.One was a biography of Malcom X. I guess we added that to his application as books that he had read. The Black teacher quizzed him on the book and asked him why he called himself "X." My son immediately told him it was because he didn't want a slave name.
6. Finally he asked some current civics questions.
