The Protocol exists to manage the consequences of the Brexit the Prime Minister chose.
The Government must not provoke more acrimony and instability in Northern Ireland.
Instead we need to see solutions, honesty, and leadership.
The concerns of unionists are real and deeply felt, but the issues that have caused those concern can be addressed.
In coming days, it is essential the the EU and UK work together to find pragmatic solutions, and help ease tension.
Firstly, it is vital we create breathing space for businesses that simply won’t be ready for the end of the grace periods.
That’s why we need to see an extension to those grace periods.
Businesses across Northern Ireland need this.
Secondly, we need red tape to be reduced in the long term. An agreement on veterinary standards would help that.
Ministers have said they want this. So get on with it, and help reduce barriers down the middle of the UK.
Next the democratic deficit must be addressed by putting Stormont, businesses and civic society at the heart of making the protocol work.
The Joint Consultative Working Group could be a powerful forum to influence decision-making. It needs to be used much more effectively.
And the UK Government must step-up. @ManufacturingNI survey last week demonstrated that business preparedness in Britain was the main factor in disruption to supply chains in Northern Ireland.
We need to see a major information drive to support GB-based businesses...
...and the struggling Trader Support Service must be scaled up with trained agents to help ease disruption on trade across the Irish Sea.
None of this is easy, but businesses and communities in Northern Ireland need this to succeed.
They need both sides to search for practical solutions that ease disruption, provide reassurance and ultimately, lower tension.

Firstly, Johnson's pledge to recruit 20,000 officers doesn't even cover those we've lost since 2010.
21,000 experienced officers have been cut in addition to the many thousands we've lost through record retirement levels thanks to the crippling morale levels in the service.
There's no mention of police staff at all - since 2010 we've lost thousands of PCSOs, call handlers, forensics officers, investigators and all the people who make the entire system work. Police officers alone don't cut it.
Ladies and Gentlemen, a very brief introduction to our new Home Secretary, Priti Patel:
In 2011 on @bbcquestiontime she advocated reintroducing the death penalty, arguing it was about the 'criminal justice system doing what it says on the tin'
In the debate around a No Deal Brexit she suggested the possibility of food shortages in Ireland should be used as leverage over the backstop.
The sensitivities of using food shortages as a weapon in Ireland either lost on her or motivating her, prompted outrage from Irish officials. thetimes.co.uk/article/3d9d4f…
Mark Field has finally been suspended from his government position but not from the Conservative Party. If his behaviour makes him unfit to be a Minister, how is he fit to be a Tory MP? He should be immediately suspended from his Party & the Whip pending disciplinary process. 1/5
The Tory MPs defending him should be utterly ashamed: Peter Bottomley, Johnny Mercer, Crispin Blunt, Nadine Dorries & Vicky Ford. Condoning his actions legitimises & normalises violence against women. Mercer said we should "calm down" & Blunt said Field should be "commended". 2/5
I used to be a Special Constable. This appears to me to be assault and he should be investigated by the police. The protesters declared they were peaceful and the full length video makes it clear she was not a threat. 3/5
