Georgia’s Black population turned out in record numbers for the November election. They clinched the victory for Joe Biden, the first Democrat to win the state since 1992.
GA state Republicans have introduced bills to drastically change voting procedures.
One House bill limits weekend early voting to just one Saturday — eliminating early voting on Sundays, when Black churches hold “Souls to the Polls” events. npr.org/2021/02/19/969…
The bills, released with little public notice, tick voter suppression boxes:
✅ Adding voter ID requirements to mail-in ballots
✅ Limiting the time frame to request & send back ballots
✅ Ending no-excuse absentee voting
✅ Removing ballot drop boxes ledger-enquirer.com/news/state/geo…
Georgia isn’t the only state introducing harsh new voting laws.
165 bills to restrict voting access have been introduced across 33 states. That’s over 4 times the amount of similar bills from roughly this time last year, according to the @BrennanCenter. brennancenter.org/our-work/resea…
GA Republicans experienced firsthand Trump’s efforts to overturn the election when he asked Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” more votes.
Now, the party is using Trump’s own big lie of election irregularities to make voting harder and less accessible.
Sen. @Ossoff: “Sunday would've been Congressman John Lewis's 81st birthday. He committed his life and indeed nearly lost his life in the struggle for voting rights. But as we speak, Georgia’s legislature is considering legislation that would make it harder for Georgians to vote.”

Amid freezing temperatures and another looming winter storm, Texans are facing a second crisis: astronomical power bills. thedailybeast.com/dollar5152-pow…
Why are these energy bills so high? You can thank Texas’s power grid for that.
The U.S. is divided into three grids: one covers the eastern states, another the western states, and then there’s the Texas grid, ERCOT, which covers nearly the entire state.
Now you might be wondering: Why does Texas have its own power grid?
If you’re familiar with the state’s history and public policy, you probably already know the answer. In short, Texas has its own grid to avoid dealing with the federal government. texastribune.org/2011/02/08/tex…
Discussing the Capitol Insurrection, @BetoORourke just now mentioned that Sen. Ted Cruz reportedly hightailed it to Cancun, Mexico, while his constituents freeze to death and have to boil water.
One reporter confirmed the Cruz-to-Cancun photo, though it is unclear if this was confirmed with Cruz's staff or the senator himself. More to come, surely.
Here we go: Lead Impeachment Manager Rep. Jamie Raskin says they want to subpoena Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) about the McCarthy-Trump phone call.
The Senate will need 51 votes to proceed on calling witnesses. This is the context for Raskin's call:
Right now the Bidens are touring the Valentine's Day display on the WH lawn. First Lady Jill Biden reportedly surprised the president with this heart-laden display.
Joe Biden's collar-up jacket look is ________.
Here's what that display looks like from a wider angle:
