Today @kcrw had a meeting to discuss @cerisecastle's appearance on @thelapod. If you haven't listened to it yet, the interview starts around 1:04:22. Because I am smart and everyone hates them, I have a recording of their meeting lmao. (thread)
thelapod.com/episode/roomke…
So right away let me say 3 things coming down the pipeline according to this meeting
1.) They've decided not to extend the #MyBlackLA project
2.) They've decided to deny all allegations and call @cerisecastle a liar
3.) Drew Tewksbury has resigned
.@benoonbenoon admits that structural racism exists then says, "The comments, the allegations, contain many statements of things that are factually incorrect." So yes, racism exists. But you're out of your black ass mind if you think anyone at KCRW has ever done it.
.@evanlgeorge says, "I think we should be concerned about how these kinds of false statements paint us as a newsroom, as an organization, as team members. And I, very frankly don't want to work in a place like the one that was discussed on that podcast."
Hmm @evanlgeorge. I guess if I didn't want to work in a place like that, I wouldn't contribute to that culture or allow it to persist after it's brought to my attention. But what the fuck do I know, I'm just one of those black liars running around.
And you bet your buns @KCRWjenniferro chimed in. "There is no effort to minimize these charges." Ok, so there's no effort to minimize these charges. You'll just simply tell everyone none of it ever happened. Got it.
You may or may not remember that @cerisecastle was one of the first journalists targeted by the LAPD during the protests last summer. Well, there's a really good part where @benoonbenoon says that he wrote a strong letter (oh no... not a strong letter!)
Then @benoonbenoon says Cerise told @kcrw not to pursue action. Well I was alive and well when this all happened and remember that KCRW actually tried to get Cerise to meet with the cops without a lawyer present!
I of course said this was stupid and told her to tell @kcrw they should provide a lawyer for whenever she gives any statements and she should under no circumstances talk to the cops alone AFTER THEY JUST SHOT HER.
(Also worth noting, @kcrw didn't want her to cover the protests! They got mad about it several times!)
The lawyer shit plays into a general theme on the call which is boy do they hate having to pay for any of this. They are UPSET that they paid for the (horrible and inept) investigations into these claims. The say the claims didn't find anything...
Cuz many of the people Cerise listed as witnesses were never contacted. They contacted the people responsible for the bad behavior then a smattering of others not on the list Cerise provided. But I'm sure if those employees HAD been contacted, they would just call them liars too.
Another thing they seem to hate is that anyone dare call them out by name. Because when you talk about people being shitty, it's your duty to keep them anonymous. As we all know the #1 rule of abuse: it's ruder to name the abusive person than it is for them to enact the abuse.
Another fun part is when they admit that "tensions existed." So at this point we've established racism is real & that tensions between these parties and in the workplace existed. Yet somehow when a black woman told them she was experiencing issues, it was all made up.
They end by saying please reach out to @KCRWjenniferro, @benoonbenoon, or @evanlgeorge. Why the fuck would anyone reach out when you just held a meeting about how when a black employee did just that, you gaslit her and accused her of lying?
A few other things I remember about @kcrw:
Some lady with an accent was like let's bring JK Rowling on to tell her side of the story
Another lady said structural racism doesn't exist
Lady said "why do you Mexicans all live in a place like that"
Paul said "make KCRW great again"
Jennifer pulled the classic "I have black kids so I get it" shit
They put up a picture of @MRTempower on a story about racial profiling and said it was a black man in a black mask because they didn't know who he was because they don't know anything about LA lmao
A black person at your station probably would have told you this is a bad idea @kcrw. But I guess y’all don’t have any. #apologizekcrw

Just did a quick read of "Diversity with Equity" which "scrutinizes two complimentary issues: diversity and pay inequity among city employees of different ethnicities, specifically pointing out the lower pay earned by employees of color, and women of color most of all." (thread)
Nearly 73% are PoC, and the proportion of black employees exceeds that of the city’s population
81% percent of women are PoC
Black women earned 25% less than the average gross salary
White men earned 21% more than the average
Of the 100 highest paid City employees, 2 were women.
So black people are overrepresented yet severely underpaid. The city is saying we'll hire you! As long as we can save money by paying you unfairly! You'll never guess which department is about proportional to black people and overrepresented by white people. LAPD!

Yesterday I read @nithyavraman's thread on her controversial yes vote on Times Mirror Square, a luxury housing project connected to the notoriously corrupt former CM Huizar. The towers will have more than 1,100 units. 24 will be moderate-income units and 10 low-income units.
I've only now watched the video of the meeting. If I'd watched just the video, I probably would have thought maybe this was a mistake (given the question asked). But then they dropped the thread justifying the vote which plants this pretty firmly as a choice in my eyes.
Both a mistake and a choice can be apologized for. But after making a bad choice and catching flack for said choice, what do politicians usually do? Double down. And that's exactly what happened with someone we hoped this wouldn't be the case with.

If you didn't know, @davidryu4u (running for City Council in LA) called @GroundGameLA an extremist group that promotes hate and violence. I can't express to you how serious it is to have an elected official say something like this. (thread)
These sorts of claims against community-led groups, historically, have emboldened cops, the FBI, & sometimes just random ass people to harass, infiltrate, surveil, and/or MURDER people. A supposed progressive Dem (his words, not mine) invoking this sort of attack is significant.
I realize some of you may not know what @GroundGameLA is. We are a grassroots group connecting communities with resources, recourse, and organizing strategies. We fight for systemic change and empower people to join that fight in whatever way they can. groundgamela.org/our-mission

Today LAPD chose to arrest someone for trying to stop a crime instead of...you know...stopping the crime. When I arrived, a man who identified himself as Dean was next to a locked U-Haul that had been loaded with the belongings of an unhoused man who was not present.
He said he was told by his employer to do so. Clearly he was trying to do his job. However, it's obvious that taking belongings that don't belong to you & that you were not told to collect by the owner, is stealing. Committing a crime cuz your boss told you isn't a valid defense.
It was explained to Dean that he was taking someone's belongings and he did not have the right to do so. We asked him to unlock the truck so we could unload it. He then called the cops. Eventually they rolled up with several cars. 4-6 I would say and like ten officers.

I know that America has trained you to think you can solve any problem with more capitalism but buying stamps is not what's going to ensure a fair election. Hate to break it to you but we never have fair elections. Suppression & disenfranchisement is a constant reality. (thread)
I think it's in our best interest to focus on things we can organize around to ensure a better (still not fair) election and take some comfort in knowing concerns about the post office disappearing have been around for years and it's still here.
These are results from pre-2016 election about how we need to save the post office: google.com/search?biw=124…

I regret to inform you that @MitchOFarrell is still on his bullshit. When word got around that a family with an infant moved into Echo Park, he showed his dusty ass up and then bragged about it during his "Councilmember in Your Corner" event that was conveniently right after.
The family has been there for weeks. So it either took him that long to hear about it or it took him that long to do something. Either way, not great! After firing @AshleyNicholeB for trying to set a meeting between him and the folks at Echo Park in January, he's ignored them.
Don't trust when a councilmember shows up to make it seem like someone needed saving. No one needs saving, @MitchOFarrell. People need support, community, and resources.
