Just not buying this was a big intelligence failure if I and many other Americans could see it coming while sitting at our houses using a basic Internet connection. No doubt those in government could see it as well, issue isn't intelligence but selection bias. #CapitolRiots
Alright, coming back to this, even more frustrating hear of intelligence failure & finger pointing Jan. 6. Even the "failure of imagination" argument just sucks. Yesterday 4 officials were interrogated for being attacked by a mob incited by the President nytimes.com/2021/02/23/us/…
Why would it be a failure of imagination that an armed mob, dressed in body armor, carrying weapons, who openly posted and spoke of attacking the Capitol would do so? Because everyone gave the elected officials a pass.
America is conducting hearings into the Jan. 6 insurrection spurred on by some who are now conducting the hearings. Senator Hawley is outside cheering on a mob Jan. 6 & now sitting in hearings asking people what happened.
The best witnesses for why we had an insurrection were in Congress and the White House. The elected leaders knew what was coming. Here's a preview of the next hearing where the DoD tries to describe how they sought to navigate bosses warning vanityfair.com/news/2021/01/e…
Our nation's law enforcement & military should not have to "imagine" how an armed mob might attack them at their place of duty based upon lies and incitement from the President & other elected officials.
I can't wait for the hearing with DoD reps regarding Jan. 6, look at this quote from the VF. vanityfair.com/news/2021/01/e…

"Russia Tried Again, Iran Antagonized, and China Didn’t Show: Insights and Lessons Learned on Foreign Influence in Election 2020" New post on foreign interference in election 2020, what did we learn? @FPRI#FIE2020 fpri.org/fie/foreign-in…
1 - Some notes on this post, no surprise to anyone that lived in the U.S. this election cycle - domestic disinformation & interference outpaced foreign disinformation by many miles, it wasn't even close.
2- all of the election defense preparation made a difference against foreign influence, lots of shutdowns and cooperation between the public & private sector in #Election2020
Last week, we outlined how Kremlin fringe news sites, banned by social media companies, make their way back onto American platforms using backlinks to duplicated websites. Here's a quick explainer on how this system works. #TrustButVerify@SecureDemocracy
In short, many I've spoken to over the last 5-6 years have claimed they don't see Russian propaganda and disinformation, and my response is often times, "how are you sure that is the case?" for example, does one immediately know where these mirror sites come from?
"How Russia Divides America" The Selected Wisdom team's second episode. Today's topic is Kremlin information warfare and how to target America with propaganda and disinformation in the lead up to an election. Hint: It's not Dems vs GOP #TrustButVerify
Lots of references inform this analysis. See this entire research stream @FPRI#FIE2020 project where we show how Russia discusses the candidate, this mirrors the social media shutdowns of Kremlin troll farm activity past 5 years fpri.org/research/fie20…
Chapters 4 & 6 of Messing with the Enemy also give a long breakdown of this targeting strategy amazon.com/Messing-Enemy-…
“After Capitol riot, a call to protect veterans from disinformation - Roll Call” - lots to unpack here, in sum, influence of current & former military via information confluence of several streams, RU disinfo a factor, but rides the wave of internal tide rollcall.com/2021/01/26/aft…
Yes, Kremlin has under discussed line of influence targeting military, RU pitch was straightforward to US military. “We’re white, you’re white, We’re Christian, you’re Christian, you like guns, we like guns, you kill terrorists, we kill terrorists - let’s do it together”
But RU propaganda & disinfo minor compared to US & military influencing itself. War on Terror conducted by only few Americans, largely disconnected from US population with each year after 9/11. Successive, endless tours to AFG/IZ led development separate warrior class sentiment
“Extremism: When Should We Worry?” Selected Wisdom team got together this week & filmed short clip, reboot of discussions we used to have about international terrorism but now we are worried about it at home. #TrustButVerify

For those that remember the GWOT days, I stole the chart concept from this classic report by @will_mccants “Militant Ideology Atlas- Executive Report” ctc.usma.edu/app/uploads/20…
No one should be surprised about what happened with Trump supporters storming the Capitol yesterday, but why yesterday, and not on election day or some other day since the election, several reasons......
1 – on election day, Trump campaign needed people to vote, they still thought they could win and almost did, so they couldn’t lead supporters to a specific time & place, by Jan 6, Trump had lost & DC/Capitol became a place where all could be directed for chaos
2 – Yesterday's insurrection was completely foreseeable, lead up election day, we saw many groups (militias, white supremacists, anti-government) calling for mobilizations to violence. The same groups have set about planning this mobilization to DC for weeks.
