I've long been fascinated with the story of the traitor Harry Cole (not the Sun journalist) who caused such havoc in wartime France - but this story is on an equally fascinating level. These are the war stories we don't hear because they don't fit the narrative...
The Harry Cole story has it all. Genuine bravery followed by - double cross - mass betrayal - a love story - and a bloody denouement.

Sunak wants to be PM. That's it. That's his overarching ambition and it drives all that he does. We need fewer politicians who want to be PM and more who actually want to do something worthwhile and useful. That's my hot take on Sunak. And indeed the entire cabinet.
I bet you even Gavin Williamson dreams of waving at the front door of Number 10 as he drifts off to sleep at night. In his BHS night cap and ill matching pyjamas.

The UK has just 25 statues to women who were not Queens or Princesses. A staggering statistic. And now the government is seeking to erect 1,700 new statues to (mostly male) war heroes reducing the ratio even further.

That would mean that just 1.5% of British statues would be to women.
This seems to be an initiative of the "Common Sense Group". That curious band of Tory MPs who have nothing better to do with their time than lament the passing of Victor Comic Britain

As I keep stressing I think the government's target is control of history, control of the narrative and division. They need a new front. I accept other aspects are at play.

I watched the 1974 remake of Brief Encounter today. It's just as good as the original, only without the warmth, direction, cinematography, Celia Howard, Rachmaninoff, claustrophobia and beauty of the original.
In one memorable sequence, Sophia Loren gets off a train onto a platform marked "Winchester" and then is seen leaving the station with the word Brockenhurst over the exit.
I've put "Celia Howard" there because my brain now hurts
