Listened to many "how to build an audience" convos on Clubhouse.

Many folks who did this 5yrs+ ago shared the same GENERIC advice:

"Stay consistent. Put in the reps. Create great content".

IMO: that's a pre-requisite, but not very helpful.

Less-obvious points I've learned

1/ One platform at a time.

@APompliano & @jackbutcher focused efforts to not spread themselves too thin.

There's a huge benefit to building natively for each platform.

Make the most of the algorithm's juice. Learn.

Then bring those folks to your next rodeo 👇🏾
2/ Understand organic reach & discoverability.

– FB: weak AF - often 1% of followers see your content

– IG: 5-15% organic reach - discover page isn't what it used to be (unless you're hot)

– Twitter, Tiktok & YT have upside in discoverability depending on your vertical
3/ Podcast discoverability & YouTube.

Apple Podcasts & Spotify discoverability is almost non-existent (when starting)

YouTube is the world's 2nd largest search engine that surfaces your work in google search.

Make the most of it:

4/ Audience ≠ Distribution

Understand OWNED, EARNED, PAID & RENTED platforms.

Email is owned.

Podcasts are leased.

Social is renting from the casino landlord.

Enjoy the free drinks & take that party home.

5/ Make some friends.

What clubhouse folks didn't share:

– many of them are in text threads with others on their way to 100k followers

– they help promote each other's work when it goes live in the first 1hr (boost algo)

– learn from each other, collab & cross-promo (smart)
6/ Do things that don't scale.

Early on, you have to:

– answer people's questions
– reply to every DM
– reach out cold to people who may find your work valuable

This is TOUGH & as @APompliano told me:
"my best piece of advice...don't even start"

7/ Paid acquisition can help once you have a working "product":

– The Hustle & Morning scaled heavily through paid ads

– "If you build it they will come" is an old skool idea that may have been true in 2012, but mostly not true in 2021.
8/ Leverage communities.

We're all bored AF sitting at home & online communities are thriving.

Make friends with people based on interests, not just proximity.

Be helpful, be genuine & share your journey.

Bond over shared struggles.

Build your foundational pillar.
9/ What stands out & spreads the most?

In my category (business):

– novel ideas
– frameworks
– actionable examples others can learn from
– business breakdowns
– transparently sharing numbers or behind the scenes
– and unfortunately, controversial, contrarian takes! 🤨
10/ Learn about the algorithm on each platform, eg:

– most hate external links, if you share a link to your website, impressions are restricted

– % completed & thumbnails (CTR) on YT are more important than no. of views (shows how interesting + valuable your content was)
11/ Use tools to understand the data:

– Twitter Analytics for engagement
– Twitter Media studio of when to post (below)
– YouTube Analytics, Tubebuddy & VidIQ for YT analysis
– Keywords Everywhere for search trends
– Ping me for others!

Reminder:
Correlation ≠ Causation
12/ Remember why you're creating in the first place.

Are you trying to grow your business?
Be rich & famous?
Meet fun people?
Learn from podcast convos?

My take:

– define what a winning scenario is.
– make it easy.
– everything else is upside.

RIP Tony Hseih 💔☹️

His philosophy + work inspired me growing up.

Ideas I come back to often:

1/ Happiness is about 4 things:

— perceived control
— perceived progress
— connectedness (depth of relationships)
— vision + meaning (being part of something bigger than yourself)
2/ on money + happiness:

“Money alone isn't enough to bring happiness.

Happiness is when you're truly ok with losing everything you have.”
3/ on taking action:

“There’s a difference between knowing the path and walking the path”

1/ "don't stop working, before it starts working" -
@jackbutcher of @visualizevalue & I discuss how to stay consistent with your craft long enough to make it work👇

& below are my 3 fav firsts on the internet from:
@joerogan @MKBHD @garyvee
2/ @joerogan's 1st episode w/ @redban was a beautiful shitshow:

figuring out how to live stream, using a webcam

"I don’t think we’re high enough for this"

after 1,547 episodes, joe is the #1 podcaster in the world + making it rain w/ @Spotify 🐐 Image
3/ @MKBHD was a 16yr old when he started making reviews on @YouTube in Jan 2009

His first was screencasted from his bedroom:

Now he's the #1 tech reviewer in the world w/ 12mil subs, 2bil views, interviewing Zucks & @elonmusk

Already an OG in the game Image
