Physician colleagues in Texas(and elsewhere), I ask that you please sign this petition for the Wattenbarger family to support them in persuading legislators to pass Betty's Law. This is especially important in light of a proposed bill, HB 2029, which

2)would allow NPs to practice medicine unsupervised. Physicians for Patient Protection(PPP) is vigorously opposing this bill because they don't wish to see any more preventable cases like Betty's. PPP was contacted by the Wattenbarger family when they read about the organization

3)in a news story concerning a NP-run hormone clinic. A community physician, @amytownsendmd, a board member of PPP, was able to get the clinic shut down after two patients died and a child was mismanaged. In both cases, NPs misrepresented themselves and "supervision" was lax.

4)kfdm.com/news/local/sou… Supervision of NPs in Texas is mandatory. The NP responsible for Betty's care was certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner in primary care(PNP-PC). However, she WAS NOT certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner in acute care(PNP-AC); thus, had no

5)education or training in recognizing and/or treating critically ill children. She failed to identify herself as a NP to the family, who presumed they were seeing a physician. Unfortunately for them, the NP's supervising physician was in Cambodia. Betty's law would mandate

6)health care professionals(HCPs) CLEARLY identify themselves by "name, department, type of license and professional status". Please let's all do our part in ensuring this transparency so that patients and their families KNOW exactly who is providing their care. Let's do it for
