Back at the border. Just wrapped a wide-ranging exclusive @NBCNews interview with @SecMayorkas about domestic terror, family separations, tent facilities, family detention, deportations, Title 42 and more. Will have the first clip on @MSNBC at 11AM ET. Hope you’ll tune in.
Yes, I cut my chin shaving.
On a potential criminal investigation of Trump officials as part of the Biden administration’s family separation reunification task force, @SecMayorkas: “Well, I-- I haven't excluded anything but what I'm focused on right now is reuniting the families.”
On building more tent or temporary facilities to house migrant children, @SecMayorkas: “We are building the capacity that we need to in order to address the needs of the children and to address the public health imperative for the American people.”
Read more about our conversation here, including @SecMayorkas’ response to my question about the Biden admin continuing to expel families to what advocates say is danger under Title 42. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
I asked @SecMayorkas about the future of family detention given President Biden's statements as a candidate.
He gave the strongest clue yet that President Biden's DHS may stop detaining migrant families.
"A detention facility is not where a family belongs."
On domestic violent extremism, @SecMayorkas told me he believes the threat currently facing the United States is "acute" and a "growing threat."

Sessions saying reuniting families “turned out to be more of a problem than I think any of us imagined it would be” is preposterous given all the evidence showing senior officials across DOJ, DHS and HHS were warned about *exactly* what ended up happening.reuters.com/article/us-usa…
It’s incredible Sessions continues to try to hide from evidence of the deliberate cruelty of family separations. Here’s a conversation I had in October with @NicolleDWallace about the mountain of evidence showing they all knew what separations would do.
President Biden called family separations "criminal" at the debate with @kwelkernbc. He told @GeoffRBennett there would be a "thorough, thorough investigation" of the policy by his DOJ. So far, no official investigation has been announced.
There's justifiable concern over Biden opening HHS influx shelters. Even an HHS official told us "none of us want to open influx facilities." It's also important to understand how they relate to and differ from the Border Patrol facility I saw kids caged in during separations.
Here's our reporting -- with @JuliaEAinsley -- on Biden opening Carrizo Springs and the possibility of seeing more temporary influx shelters like it. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
BREAKING: In new court filing, lawyers say they still haven't reached parents of 506 children separated by Trump admin. Of the 506:
➡️ Parents of 322 kids were deported
➡️Parents of 168 are believed to be in the U.S.
➡️ There is no contact information for parents of 16 kids
The last time there was joint status report, in January ahead of Inaugration Day, parents of 611 children had not yet been reached. So lawyers have been able to make contact with parents of 105 kids who were separated by Trump since then.
I appreciate the sentiment but, for starters, five days ago live on national television I asked the lead sponsor of the Biden admin’s immigration bill about how it doesn’t eliminate immigration detention or 8 U.S. Code § 1325.
