We have to fight to make #HR1 a reality. This means writing and/or calling your Senators to tell them you support it. It also means we should identify the provisions that are most accessible & politically popular & amplify them. We should have local (masked) rallies. @dccc @DNC
If you have a moderate Dem Senator, I think writing them (en masse!) could be effective & calling is always very good. Also contact your reps. If you have a GOP Senator, I would say calling is likely more effective than writing. But just contact them either way.
What are the aspects of Hr1 that are most accessible to the public & has cross-appeal? I think same-day reg is one. "End big money in politics" is another. We need to target & amplify those issues. "Ending Gerrymandering" is just as important, but might be less accessible.
The most effective way to win this fight is to amplify the issues that Senators will feel the most pressure over. Those issues may differ between states. Painting Hr1 as the biggest Civil rights legislation in decades could help pressure Dems in red states or R's in purple ones.

Jacobin has decided to publish a class-based statistical analysis of the 2020 election and, predictably, it is awful.

ImageImage
There are a lot of probs w/ the analysis, which are made harder to analyze b/c they haven't published their method. For my part I'm stuck on things like "counties /=population" & "was there no vote change in LA or does Jacobin think there are no working class Black people there?" Image
I have questions. I'm sure they will be totally resolved by the release of a method that doesn't involve cherry-picking at all & can 100% explain these data on working class Black counties in Maine ImageImage

Here's a thing you can do to help our democracy today: if you have acquaintances who may not vote for Dems in the midterms (GOP; disengaged, etc), send them a text saying the stimulus passed & include info about what that means. You don't have to frame it in a partisan way
Like, "Hey! Good news! This bill just passed the Senate and you might qualify for childcare credits! It's 3600 per kid under the age of 6 if you make under 150k!"

It's important to tie concrete aspects of the legislation to the party
Or you can even just make it about you, "I'm so excited cause me and Bob are going to get 2800 dollars and the kids are gonna get some cash too. Plus we'll get this much more in childcare!" Or whatever it means to you.

1. Which "social" issues should Democrats be more conservative on & how does polling support this?

2. This misunderstands, I think, the extent to how all of these "social" issues are intertwined in cultural identities that are increasingly divorced from specific causes
Catholics may be an exception, such that perhaps we could persuade a few more to vote for a D "pro-life" candidate (I don't think we should do this). But in terms of the GOP base more generally, you're not going to peel away voters by catering to a single element of their bigotry
We're certainly not going to get any more white evangelical votes from throwing a specific group under the bus (&, again, this would be wrong even if it could work). Their political identity is cultural. You don't shift the calculus on *one* issue to successfully persuade them.

There are a lot of reasons to feel frustrated about our flawed & unrepresentative democracy. But extant flaws are only exacerbated by defeatism. For example, research has indicated that the mere existence of the EC discourages voting b/c people don't believe their votes matter.
To which you might reply, reasonably, "well that's b/c their votes don't matter in certain states." Therein lies the problem: some states, like, say, TX, might already be purple-blue if people rejected this reasoning & decided to vote anyway.
So, there's a feedback loop here & it seems, in an unbalanced way, to effect our side more than the other. And, to the extent that we want to win, we have to reject defeatism. Look at what's happened in VA! Or look at the 2018 wave despite *huge* structural disadvantages.

What happened to Neera Tanden was wrong, not just in terms of her personal story, but also because of the larger socio-political dynamics at play. Tanden was attacked because she is a woman who is confident in her political affiliation & who justifiably criticized Republicans.
This interacted with other dynamics, such as grudges over the 2016 primary, the fact that twitter amplifies & even creates stories out of thin air, & the tendency from some in the media to drive scandals motivated by perceived personal conflict, rather than objective evidence.
This resulted in an evidence-free situation in which a woman’s reputation was bound to “mean tweets,” despite the fact that the "mean" tweets don’t exist. And, yes, this was made possible by the fact that Tanden is not just a woman, but a woman of color.

Please recall that our society has always "cancelled" people &, in the past, this cancellation was often for bad reasons. Rupert Everett famously said that coming out ruined his career. Being openly LGBTQ is still perilous for actors. "The Chix" were cancelled for being anti-war.
I'll repeat what I've said before: that "cancel culture" is an amorphous euphemism that encompasses all kinds of disparate phenomena. In the case of companies "canceling" a creator, conservatives have always been fine w/ it when this "cancellation" fit their ideology.
