THREAD: New data from the #Return2Learn Tracker! @AEI's @natmalkus continues to follow how school districts across the United States are changing and adapting to the ongoing #COVID19 pandemic. /1
#R2L data reveal that in-person instructional offerings keep growing. By February 22, more districts offered fully in-person options than any time since the beginning of November. /1
There are stark differences in offerings by urbanicity. Fully remote rural districts are now in the single digits at 8%. By contrast, urban districts have more than triple the proportion at 29%, & suburban have more than double the proportion of fully remote districts at 20%. /2
#R2L data also reveal big variations in plans across states. California currently has the highest proportion of fully remote districts at 60%, while four states have zero percent fully remote districts—Nebraska, Nevada, Florida, and Utah. /3
The proportion of districts with “aggressive” reopenings—districts that are fully open despite high COVID-19 cases—is shrinking rapidly because of declining COVID-19 rates. /4
NEW from @AEI: The #Return2Learn Tracker, developed by @natmalkus and @C2Initiative, follows how school districts across the United States are changing and adapting to the ongoing #COVID19 pandemic. /THREAD
#R2L monitors 8,000+ public school districts on a weekly basis & presents the data by numerous measures. It identifies the current instructional status of all regular public school districts with 3 or more schools, categorizing them as fully in-person, hybrid, or fully remote. /2
The latest round of #R2L data collection shows that over one third of school districts are open with an option for fully in-person instruction five days per week for all students. /3
(1/5) How should school leaders and policymakers plan for school reopening given the lack of clear guidance? @John_Bailey offers some thoughts @EducationNextbit.ly/2wBtoHg
(2/5) Since we do not seem to be near a peak yet, we're likely to see governors extend closures for another 2-4 weeks. A number will close for the rest of the year.
(3/5) School and state leaders will need to continue efforts to mitigate the loss of learning from this year’s closures including strengthening remote learning options, providing #SEL supports, and adjusting school meal distribution.
