For those interested on how America came to burn face masks, I've just written a brief history of the deadly health freedom movement in the US in @jclinicalinvest
"America's deadly flirtation with anti-science and the medical freedom movement"
It builds on my years of experience going up against the ringleaders of these Antiscience movement as outlined in my 2018 book jhupbooks.press.jhu.edu/title/vaccines…
And further contextualized in my newest book:
Preventing the Next Pandemic: Vaccine Diplomacy in a Time of Anti-Science @JHUPress as recently highlighted on @CNN
1/5: So something I’ve not said but I I think should be said goes like this:
In 2020, the Trump White House unleashed a devastating deliberate antiscience disinformation campaign that cost thousands of American lives. I’ve written about this @PLOSBiologyjournals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…
It’s not the same thing. All of us are speaking constantly to colleagues to figure a way out of this pandemic, and we have different perspectives and concerns. There’s no precedent, we’re devastated at the loss of 500,000 Americans who lost their lives.
1/3 Many thanks @WillieGeist @mikebarnicle for hosting me @Morning_Joe re long haul #covid: problem of enormous magnitude affecting up to 30% survivors. We’re talking as many as 10-30 million Americans with respiratory cardiovascular neurological illness
2/3 Mechanisms of long haul not known, I spoke briefly on @VirusesImmunity@YaleIBIO work on autoantibodies, also studies on microglial cell activation, and @NIH efforts to study and support work in these areas
3/3 and my concerns about Black and Brown or low-income communities not having access to specialty long haul clinics and new therapies. With so many people affected this will change medical practice and training
Thank you again to @LisaGray_HouTX for the amazing “Peter Hotez’s Fight” @HoustonChron article in today’s Sunday print ed. Reports on my decade-long battle with antivaccine antiscience groups. In 2020 they expanded from Texas to become a global antiscience empire
The antiscience empire: 1) “health freedom” movement that accelerated in Texas in 2015 as a PAC, 2) expansion through QAnon other extremist groups in Western Europe, 3) national antivaccine orgs, 4) health wellness industry funding, 5) Putin led Russian Govt health disinformation
Many of these activities specifically target high profile scientists. I get to be the “OG Villain” designated by RFK Jr. This amplified in 2020 when I also worked to dismember the White House CoV Task Force program of disinformation that began last Feb-March, a year ago actually
As reported @TheHill I’ve been doing zoom calls every week with @EricTopol + a few others (note to follow). In addition to being one of the smartest physician-scientists I know, turns out he’s kind, caring, compassionate, a great guy. If I were starting over I would work for him
Along those lines it was @mtosterholm who introduced me, who just blows me away with his ability to combine epidemiology with policy, and weave it into a narrative. He started our calls last year.
I’m not sure if I’m supposed to name the others in our group due to confidentiality. Other than to say it’s not a men’s club. We speak each week to 3 extraordinary women physician scientists with years of Govt experience + profound depth of knowledge wisdom. A highlight of my wk
So absolutely. I would go on @BET in a heartbeat if invited. In fact once we saw our our results in @socscimed on high vaccine hesitancy in Black community, I’ve accepted every invitation to go on radio programs that reach Black communities. Have done 6 or 7 since January
I’m 2020 @AnnHotez said to me (paraphrasing) this is why you got your MD and PhD to use your knowledge to help people. You don’t want to wake up one morning and realize you could have done more to save lives. And that’s why...
When I saw the antiscience disinformation campaign coming out of the White House in 2020 (I was among the first to see it coming based on my experiences going up against antivaxxers for years) I attacked it and tore it apart.
1/3: Many thanks @KatyTurNBC for hosting me @KatyOnMSNBC with @ZekeEmanuel @PhilipRucker sharing our concerns about the variants of concern in NY FL CA and the urgency to accelerate our national COVID19 vaccination program.
2/3: we agree it’s disappointing not having J&J doses available now as promised by OpWarpSpeed, so in lieu of that, do we have options. Both Zeke and Mike Osterholm favor delaying 2nd immunizations for the mRNA vaccines and I understand and appreciate their arguments.
3/3: But I’m less enthusiastic, we don’t have data on neutralizing antibodies for single dose immunizations vs the VOCs and the Scottish study mentioned shows inferiority: 2 dose 88% vs 1 dose 57% in older; 85% vs 72% in younger. I prefer to see AZOx out sooner under an EUA
