THE TEARS AND WOES OF THE HOUSE OFFICER, THE MOST ABUSED AND MALTREATED DOCTOR IN NIGERIA
Medical education in Nigeria lasts for 6 years, after which the new Doctor has to do a compulsory one year program called internship or Housemanship in a teaching hospital or
Federal Medical Centre. This Doctor called a House Officer, practices with a temporary (provisional) license under the supervision of more senior Doctors which can be registrars, senior registrars or consultants. It is only at the end of this program that he can enroll in the
mandatory NYSC program.
A House Officer is the first port of call when a new patient reaches the hospital. He clerks the patient and presents same to his seniors who make a diagnosis and write out what the house officer should do for the patient.
The house officer does jobs which demands the closest contact with the patient such as securing IV access, taking blood and urine samples, passing catheter, transfusing blood, monitoring a woman in labour, administering medications to inpatients, passing feeding tube,
clerking and examining patients, booking theatre and preparing patients for surgery, fetching blood from the bank and loaning for patients who have no donor.
The house officer carries out every demeaning task in the hospital.
Sometimes they are sent by some seniors to carry
out unbecoming tasks which are in no way part of their job description such as going to buy moi moi, going to buy chewing gum or sometimes even going to pick children of seniors from school and unfortunately they can't say No because they need the signatures of seniors to move
ahead in life.
House Officers are refused the right to enroll in National Health Insurance Scheme because "they are temporary staff" even though they are the ones most prone to work place related hazard and stress-induced sickness.
Many House Officers work 72 hour shift
with no rest and some House Officers are on permanent call every night for 2-4 werks because they are the only House Officer in the unit as Nigerian Hospitals are always understaffed. Many Teaching Hospitals which should be manned by 150 House Officers are manned by 50. These
50 work to their death.
When House Officers make mistakes due to overwork, they are punished with even more work which comes in form of "extension". The House Officer may work for upto 2 extra months without pay e.g the case of one Dr Iruka from UUTH
House Officers get diseases all the time e.g Hepatitis B from needle stick injury due to lack of concentration from overwork and burnout syndrome.
House Officers get needle stick injuries from HIV patients and they have to take Post Exposure Prophylaxis for upto 4 weeks with
devastating side effects including Nightmares from Efavirenz.
House Officer Salaries is the lowest among the salary of Doctors yet they are usually irregular, halved, unduly taxed, extorted, delayed without any explanation with no regards to whether these ones have dependents
or not.
House officers are constantly verbally abused and downgraded by dare-devil seniors who tell them things like, "You are a disgrace.". "You can never make it in this profession. "You are pathethic." etc
Even with all the problems listed above, House Officers salaries are
sometimes withheld for months as it is currently happening all over Nigeria.
Little Wonder why post housemanship Doctors leave the country with the next available bus.
There is a questiin we should all ask ourselves. When the Nigerian government and elders in the Medical
Profession keep working in synergy to frustrate young Doctors who ever dreamt of practicing in this country and force them into flights to the middle east, who will take care of sick Nigerians in the future?

This is Dr Okorie Ifeanyi Venatus,an intern Doctor in UPTH. He collapsed with his forehead to the ground after a 72 hour shift as the only House Officer in the unit.
He and other intern Doctors all over Nigeria have not been paid for 3 months now (Since December 2020).
A country which treats bandits and herdsmen better than her Doctors is headed for doom.
There is no one to speak for these young, helpless, Vulnerable Doctors called House Officers . Their umbrella body NARD, which they pay dues to, keeps telling stories after stories since January. No action. Imagine working for 3 months under harsh conditions but no pay.
In december of 2003, Joyce Vincent died of an asthma attack in her North London flat. The television was left on.
The mail continued to be delivered. Her rent was set up to be automatically deducted from her bank account.
The days rolled by and no one noticed she was gone.
Those days turned into weeks and the weeks into months.
There were large trash dumpsters on the side of the building next to her unit, so the neighbors never thought much of the smell emanating from her flat.
The floor was full of noisy kids and teenagers and no one questioned the constant thrum of television noise in the background.
Eventually, Joyce’s bank account dried up.
Her landlord sent her letters of collection. These letters, like the others, simply fell into the stacks
I once worked in a hospital in Lawanson, Surulere. One evening around 9pm, I was on my way home when two men intercepted me. It happened around Boluke Pharmacy by Otunba bus stop. The light was bright and people were passing by but nobody stopped.
They showed me a pistol and asked me to bring my phone and all my belongings. There was no way I was giving out that phone. That was the very night I was expecting a text message that could change my whole
They cocked the gun and threatened to shoot but I stood my ground.
They took my wallet. Luckily I had left my debit cards in the hospital at the suggestion of one of the nurses on night duty. The wallet contained about 6k. They hit my head and dealt with me severely then left.
An 8 month pregnant wife had a little quarrel with her husband this morning which got physical. She grabbed a kitchen knife and amputated the man's penis. When next you want to advocate against domestic violence, remember that it can be both ways.
(Viewers Discretion Advised)
UPDATE: This man would have bled to death if he was not rushed to the hospital because the penis has a very rich blood supply. The blood supply to the penis is CLOSE to the brain's. Bleeding was immediately controlled.
His penis can't be re-attached because it "died off" so to speak before it could get to the hospital.
This man will not be able to have sex for the rest of his life. This man will be urinating via a catheter(a rubber tube passed into his bladder) for the rest of his life.
A Doctor friend once needed money to pay for his Medical License and Plan his Induction Reception. His budget was about 400k(License, University Induction Fee, Suit and Accesories, Reception) . He didn't even have upto 50k in his account.
A senior colleague, a Senior Registrar he had been very loyal to, promised to give him 100k. 3 weeks to Induction, Chief stopped picking and returning his calls. He never heard from him again. He ran into the SR after Sponsio. He didn't apologize. He pretended as if nothing happened
He even asked my friend to help him pick his children from school which he did.
After Housemanship my friend was posted to Kogi which happened to be the man's state 4 Service. When he posted 'Kogi Kopa' on Facebook, d man called him and told him that he had accomodation for him
