perhaps obvious but i suspect that large amounts of space was a massive factor in americas individualist streak. everywhere ive lived ive had at least one close neighbor infringing on me in a variety of ways and it gives me a visceral possibly illogical reaction to libertarianism
i used to be punk rock say no to rules guy but after the shaking the room techno at 3am neighbor and the playing trumpet at night neighbor and the guy who made my wife sick with cigarette smoke an atavistic part of me is ready to 1984 big brother up. perhaps this explains britain
“would you trade freedom for comfort”

me generally: of course not

me when i can hear my neighbor through my headphones: Image
its the grey area that makes me very sympathetic to returning to monkey state. either i need the grip of society to enforce certain standards [or] i need to be able to enforce my own standards myself, perhaps via duels, for example. hovering in this middle ground is emasculating
its emasculating. had this neighbor once me. i asked him to stop doing something. he said no. landlord couldnt do anything. so am i really going to go to jail to fight this guy. ofc not. would that even do anything? so i moved. “the system” is weighted towards the obstinate ones.
conversely one time someone beat up a cab driver and ran into our building (i dont live there anymore) and that same neighbor asked if it was me (it was not me), so, perhaps my aura is more threatening than i assume. still not my style. maybe if i move and can hear a tv again

saw this story making the rounds. used to work with art people. u have to realize the people running this dr seuss organization probably hate him. thats usually how it is. look at this: the decision to do this was made long ago but they announced it on his birthday, to spite him:
you, naturally, as a sane person, would think, “oh, this person works at XYZ Artists Foundation, they must love XYZ artist”. thats not how it is. usually its just a job for them and theyre actually the most critical of the artist, you can usually hear the spite in their voice.
to be fair, its split. you get into this scene of people and its one way or the other, they either really love the art or they think its stupid that anyone cares and they view their “customers” with the same disdain, more actually, than the average cashier (cashier life what up)

great example of the classic socially enforced double bind, wherein if you dont want to do X youre insane / evil but if you eagerly do X your motives are questioned. its structured so that no matter which path you choose, ultimately lateral policing of behavior comes out on top
101 but “the spectacle” can be modeled as a biological organism that spontaneously generates these types of things to ensure that its always reinforced. another great one is that not caring about countries is bad but caring too much gives you a neocolonial ”savior” complex
yesterday a friend was telling me about their boss who does all this charity work for + in africa and used the term “white savior”, but then when i pressed her on if it would be better to not care about that she completely flipped, because its not about the actual position.

my neighbor just sits in his car with the door open blasting pop country on the radio while smoking cigarettes and aside from being annoying im like, bro if youre gonna do that you can step the music game up. im about to make a mix CD for a fifty year old man
if youre gonna get wasted and sit in your car in the middle of the day you can at least pretend its aesthetic with the right jams but the pop country is not the right maneuver here
this is the same guy who tried to buy my rocking chair so i let him have it. when he first moved in my wife brought cookies over. unsurprisingly we did not get the tupperware back. women care about that apparently, its like the equivalent of fishing gear to them or something.

after years of contrary experience and an impossible to quantify amount of evidence deep down its still difficult for me to believe that most people lack the ability to reflect on what theyre saying and thinking and to check if it makes sense.
i dont really talk to people in real life about any "political" topics anymore, but sometimes my wife does, or, to say it more accurately, sometimes ill hear people bring it up to her. yesterday she was on the phone with this guy that i know is ostensibly intelligent. [...]
and he says, yeah, [this person or group] is just crazy evil, they're horrible and evil + bad. and she asks, innocently, with no real point to make, what do you mean, what evil thing have they done? and he gives the same kind of spiel, and shes like, can u name something specific

soviet propaganda is notorious in the history of art for a variety of reasons. theres a subset of these images that focus on religion, specifically on being anti-religion. perhaps you have seen some things like this before. for example, this one says, "i see no god"
i was going over these while doing some research and it occurred to me that most of them operate on what i would call a visual rhetorical device. theyre quite well done and straightforward. for this reason, i thought it would be easy to flip their message + make them pro-religion
