Canadian citizens deserve to know the answer to that question.
An ASIRT investigation is NOT sufficient. The public deserves accountability and to know the extent of this illegal activity by those entrusted to protect us.
This is not a new problem. The erosion of civil liberties has been happening since 2006.
Coincidentally, during the same time frame Canada had a conservative govt.
What behaviour was Stephen Harper held in contempt of parliament? Withholding information from parliament.
When government officials & leaders display such disdain and disrespect for opposition and the citizenry, is it possible they would use or encourage surveillance of dissenting politicians & citizens to monitor political activities? Yes.
Hmm? Who was leader of opposition in 2018? Jason Kenney, former MP & Harper’s second in command during CPC government.
And who has Kenney appointed as advisor along with a cushy nepotism appointment for $100K as well? Stephen and Ben Harper.
Many may not remember, but Harper government was involved heavily in sharing surveillance data with the US NSA until Edward Snowden blew the whistle. Whatever you think of Anowden, he did reveal a sharp move towards police state surveillance by US and Canada.
So Alberta has the EXACT same people who allowed federal illegal surveillance to be used in CSIS for a decade under their watch, and showed complete disdain for the Canadian public to share necessary information to assess a budget appropriately.
If bad players demonstrate their disdain for the public in the federal realm, what’s the likelihood they would use the same methods in the provincial political arena? I’d say the probability is pretty damn high.
Alberta is swiftly becoming an example of far right corruption.
When the exact same people are the very same conservative politicians when illegal surveillance activities by intelligence and law enforcement are discovered, multiple times in history, that should at the very least pique citizens attention and concern.
Yes a full investigation of these activities is required. An independent investigation. How deep does the rot go?
Is it just Lethbridge police that has fallen off the rails? Or is this a much bigger issue involving province wide police forces illegal breach of privacy?
It is not beyond the realm of possibility. The probability is far closer to one than zero.
How much further into autocracy does Alberta need to fall before something is done to halt this trajectory?
I’m tired of pretending all is normal and well.
It is not even close to normal for 5 individuals (1 civilian and 4 police officers) to monitor a popular left wing politician while she is in office and also a Cabinet Minister with significant responsibility.
It’s a serious breach of privacy and a clear warning to citizens.
Was any of the surveillance information shared with oil industry corporations? Was confidential provincial govt business also surveilled & possibly shared with industry insiders? Shannon Phillips was AB Minister Responsible for Climate Change at the time she was surveilled.
It’s time for the provincial and national public to begin questioning how deeply law enforcement and military ranks have been compromised by far right infiltration. And to demand a public investigation to answer that question effectively.
If you agree, you may want to let your MP or Public Safety Canada Minister Bill Blair know your feelings about the matter.
And to preempt any federal NDP disinformation, Blair was sidelined during 2010 G20 meeting while Federal authorities monitored national security.
The problem is clearly emanating from far right economic ideology and policy.
Liberals shut down CSIS/CSEC surveillance and data retention and forced a purge of all data. But they don’t have purview to force provincial police forces to do this. Premiers and their govts do.
What most don’t realize is that Singh completely understands the division of responsibility. What he’s doing repeatedly is selling acceptance of nationalization of all authority.
Meaning, he’s promoting autocracy replace the constitution.
People keep stating Jagmeet Singh doesn’t understand section 90 and 91 of the constitution.
He does understand. What he’s doing is recommending the federal government override those sections and impose central authority to get policy implemented.
That’s a big difference.
We must stop mislabeling politicians rhetoric and call it out for what it actually is.
Singh is repeatedly recommending a central overall authority.
But that’s not how Canada is set up. Canada is a confederation of 13 separate authorities. Ten provinces and 3 territories.
If you read through every tweet, you’ll recognize many of the same tactics were used by Harper and CPC that Trump used to damage American democracy. His party was plagued with many of the same kind of scandals and corrupt politicians.
The similarities are uncanny and impossible to miss. A telltale sign that this strategy is planned, coordinated and organized.
If you look elsewhere across the globe, you’ll notice it’s the same story being repeated.
I’m watching the movement build in real time. Radio interviews, network video interviews. Widespread condemnation of Christian prosecution from pastors and Christian Networks. Definitely a martyr complex being built in.
Main theme is God’s commandments and laws supersede secular laws.
Applied outside of Public Health, this poses a significant law enforcement conundrum and legal nightmare.
Other pastors from across North America have been spreading the lie that pastor Coates is being prosecuted for preaching about god. He’s being prosecuted for flavouring the public health orders for public safety from covid for months.
This is no longer local. Evangelical Christians have elevated him to martyr status. And this is being propagated across Canada, US and Mexico at evangelical pulpits, on social media and network Christian news.
All because a pastor refused to follow the public health orders.
This feeds into Q’Anon and Christian Nationalist narratives.
