Re the situation in Syria please see Irish Syria Solidarity Movement detailed letter to @simoncoveney and accompanying press release which will provide background to inform future discussions you may have on Syria
Very strange in discussion about the horror of Syria for Assad to be mentioned once, in passing, as far as we heard
Syria is not a civil war but a war of subjugation & extermination by Assad regime vs civilian population, plus actions of other countries pursuing own agendas
Humanitarian crisis in N Syria is hugely exacerbated by closure of all but one border aid crossing by Russia veto at UNSC, & Russia's threat to close the last crossing @simoncoveney@irishmissionun hold Syria humanitarian file at UNSC & are committed to somehow keep crossing open
Syrians have been working meticulously to hold war criminals & those guilty of crimes against humanity to account, legal cases are being taken in a number of European countries vs perpetrators from the Assad regime, one accused in Germany found guilty of crimes against humsnity
Syrians are clear that the hundreds of thousands of disappeared & murdered in detention in Syria must be top of agenda re future of Syria: survivors must be released, dead returned to families, ongoing arrests must stop
Assads have ruled thru terror of their prisons for 50 yrs
Assad regime wd not surviv without Iran backed militias on the ground enforcing starvation sieges & forced displacement & Russia in the air obliterating towns, hospitals, schools
Must be maximum pressure on Iran & Russia -both have profited hugely - to stop backing Assad terror
In addition Syrians are faced with tyranny of extremists groups, with eg HTS & SDF imitating Assad's tactics, & ISIS continuing their campaign with little intervention by Assad
Syrian civil society exists in spite of all of this & provided with peace & justice can renew Syria

This Charter describes the justice victims aspire to. The victims are at the core, they are the cornerstone, they have a central role as active actors not just victims or witnesses.
Charter goes beyond demands to propose solutions & practical mechanisms to reveal fate of the Disappeared, with victims at heart of any work for justice & accountability
‘you mentioned in your introduction about the expulsion of three European diplomats,a German,a Pole anda Swede a couple of days ago.And of course, this happened when Josep Borrell , the foreign policy chief, was in town. And it was essentially done deliberately to humiliate him/2
and to say to to to the world, 'butt out of our affairs, if if we wish to imprison or poison our political prisoners, we will.' ..'Until the EU actually steps up here, the criminal will carry on doing what what it does and exploiting European hesitancy and weakness, I would say/3

whether military or business&that's a difficult concept2 hear esp from ppl who've been fighting against war crimes & crimes ag humanity, esp Syrians who have been on receiving end of Russian brute force. That's a geopolitical reality than needs2 b factored in/3
In 2018 @rte ignored our protests re the What in the World episode from Aleppo which was part funded by the Right wing actively pro Assad group SOS Chrétiens d'Orient who have links to militias in Syria suspected of war crimes
The first of those thanked by the maker of that film was Beatrice Challan Belval, Chef de Mission of SOS CdO in Syria
'Around one of the tables is Hala Chawi a businesswoman & personal friend of Asma al-Assad, the wife of the Syrian President' lexpress.fr/actualite/mond…
'To the right of Hala Chawi, are seated Alexandre Goodarzy and Béatrice Challan-Belval, both heads of mission in Syria of the charitable association SOS Chrétiens d'Orient (SOS CO)'
Yet @rte dismissed our claims the programme promoted the Assad narrative on Aleppo
'A litany of failures by the UN has resulted in the Syrian people feeling abandoned by the international community. An argument could be made that the UN did not simply fail but is complicit in the murder of Syrians on a huge scale' middleeastmonitor.com/20210206-has-t… https://t.co/VIAVRunySj
'A recent revelation that the World Health Organisation, a body that feeds into the UN, has been using the Rami Makhlouf-owned airline "Cham Wings" to deliver aid to Libya is deeply disturbing. Makhlouf, a cousin of Bashar Al-Assad, is on the EU & the Caesar Act sanctions' lists'
'Makhlouf exemplifies the corrupt elite who have profited under Assad rule & until very recently, has had vast influence within the regime. The UN should be held to account for using his company'
