Why does Mayor Bowser want to pull money from public health during a pandemic? DC wants to defund the people's needs and give more money to police. We need a dramatic reallocation of funds from police, who have failed the people. WE AGREE @SeanBlackmon9
"In DC there's at least 10,000 empty housing units, yet we still have people sleeping on the street." - @SeanBlackmon9
DC has the money AND has the resources to make sure every single person's needs are met. It's a choice to prop up a murderous police department.
"MPD has claimed to be concerned about racial disparities, yet they continue to hide and cover up that fact. How can we trust MPD to reform itself?" -- @valocipede
MPD has been sued multiple times because they lie, hide data, and restrict the public's access to information
"A hearing without questions is a sham hearing." -- @valocipede
TOMORROW The DC Council’s Judiciary Committee will be holding an oversight hearing on the DC Police Department’s performance. So let’s see... how has the MPD performed over the last year? #DefundMPD#NoMoreStopAndFrisk
It stopped releasing data on stop-and-frisks, yet AGAIN violating the law. And again, when it was sued and forced to follow the law, it turned out MPD made a huge number of stops and a huge majority of those stops were of Black people. #NoMoreStopAndFrisk dcist.com/story/21/02/17…
After working with the Oath Keepers and other far right groups to detain and try to convict 2016 inauguration protesters, DC police made no attempt to prevent or stop the violent attack on the Capitol by some of those same far right groups... 🤔 thedailybeast.com/feds-use-right…
ABOUT LAST NIGHT. @DCPoliceDept, which claimed to be offended and betrayed by the idea that it was in any way in need of reform, used pepper spray, rubber bullets, and flash bangs on protesters in order to take down mutual aid stations and tents provided for homeless residents.
There is no blaming everything on federal agencies this time. While US Park Police were also involved this was @MayorBowser's @DCPoliceDept leading the way. The police department she wants to give $19 million on top of the $560 million it already has. #DefundMPD#DefundDCPolice
Let's review what they did to DC residents... We often try to avoid tweeting out re-traumatizing images and videos of violence but we think it's important this time for people to know exactly what happened here on "Black Lives Matter Plaza."
The camera rebate program was part of @MayorBowser's terrible, unconstitutional, 2015 "crime bill" that was folded into the #NEARact. Since the Act passed in 2016, they have funded 10,000 surveillance cameras. In that same time, here's where other NEAR Act progrmas stand. THREAD
