Nuns in a Dublin monastery dancing to South African dance music! 😅👏🏾🔥 Pound for pound investment almost always starts with cultural exchange. All of these viral videos are broaching the export experience of “niche” sounds that are otherwise deemed non-commercial.
Music can hit spaces FIRST that the respective makers of the genre may not be able to reach. I traveled the world based on music I made or played on my radio show which peaked interest. That’s how international markets for music are now built.
You can’t force those exchanges though. They will occur naturally but I don’t think people understand how the cultural impact of music then goes on to shape whatever ideas we have about a community. The thing that’s holding up the transference of trade is scared bookers.
For many reasons music from South Africa is being invested in. But is that being followed up by establishing infrastructure for the music and IP to flow BOTH ways or is talent just being siphoned from the region.

Not just talking about this record either.
Brokering better trade and international relationships based on exciting new music which can not be replicated and more importantly is infectious! African and Asian markets are there to be explored.

Don’t always look to established spaces. Be bold!
This coming off the back of BTS being the biggest act in the world and the majority of their catalogue being in South Korean. I don’t think it’s always a prerequisite that lyrics have to be understood in music because they can be felt..... e.g like Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Need to see much more “risks” being taken and TBF it’s not really a risk if the music has developed a following and trend online. Proof is there it will work. Time to build reciprocal relationships in these new global territories.
I always listen to music with my DJ ear. Fortunately because I produce as well I can identify what I like but also what works irrespective of whether I like it personally or not. Some music just works but the infrastructure has not been built around it to sustain it.

Of course it’s always “Happy Mother’s Day”....But this day, this year, after the week we’ve had feels so disingenuous it’s unreal.
I can definitely understand now how Mothers Day would have been devised by men to atone for their behaviour the rest of the year. There’s duality in parenting which means the experience of a mother is directly related to that of the father. So a mother is VALUED by collaboration.
Male ego makes us believe that the recognition we give to women/mothers on this day is enough to mend the wounds. Fathers feel that can only provide that level of respect if there’s emotional investment. So it’s for butthurt men about the return.

Culture is something you live and breathe because it’s something you’re passionate about. Counter-Culture that has to be developed to change real problematic aspects of society has to be undertaken with the same vigour. Hence why some of us sound like “broken records”
Men have to openly disagree and professionally adhere to new standards. If as a man you are uncomfortable of having one to one conversations because ironically you yourself fear repercussions/reprisals then simply withdraw all support to start with. Especially professional.
I know there’s men who know what I know because I’ve been in the industry a certain length of time but they still work with individuals because they help keep the lights on. That’s why I can’t rate people in the industry who literally prioritise money over everything.

Women in music don’t doubt yourself. Start punching. Go for whatever. Shoot your shot. I’ve played with big big man that clang. I’ve played with big big man who don’t make their own tunes. The landscape is full of chancers. Don’t worry about being ready. You learn on the job! ❤️
Chances are you’re taking advice from someone who can’t beat match but is saying “work harder”..... listen!! You’re ready. Most of us started on pirate. No formal broadcast training. We just picked up things. Get started. The help is out there. ❤️👌🏾
All this “Expert” malarkey!! Loooool we’re experts in taking chances. DAZZIT!! Don’t feel intimidated. Even some fantastic artists don’t know it all. That’s why they hire team members to help them. The landscape is not intimidating as it looks. Please come start.

This is not a witch-hunt. This is going to be revelation on exactly why this behaviour, the institutional racism within my industry of work won’t be tolerated any longer. I understand many watching these next tweets have existing relationships....
and I completely understand also that there are those who will chose to observe rather than engage in any part of what I’m going to say next. But I’m not having a discussion on the timeline about this other than the solution..
You have no right to talk on the validity of what I’m about to say. If you’ve followed me for a while or actually know me. I’m a balanced person and I am too, empathetic and considerate of different perspectives. Not just my own.

Shall we talk about Black female vocalists on House music tracks used for authenticity but never making the visuals for the marketed video or worse yet credited as the featuring act?! 🤷🏾‍♂️
Albeit paid session singers, providing top line and sometimes even lyrics for tracks but receiving zero visibility EVEN though they have aspirations as solo acts themselves.

Brothers and sisters of all races. I tell you. The fuckry runs deep in this shit.
Music videos and visuals are tricky. Especially as an independent label that I own. I learned two things very quickly. What’s the industry standard and also what am I ALLOWED to do...
