Since the advent of App stores (2008) the global gaming industry has been evolving consistently every 2 years either on the content or platform side of the industry. A dynamic shift that creates opportunities to build large companies. (1/n) #Gaming#Mobile#India
These Shifts are from Premium Mobile Games -> Mobile Freemium -> Midcore Freemium -> HyperCasual + Ads -> Alternative distribution channels for PC gamers -> VR/AR
-> Metaverses/Cloud Gaming and more. #Mobile#Gaming#India (2/n)
Even though a large of these do affect all geographies including India -we have to make peace with the fact that Gaming industry in India at any sizeable scale took off only 6 years back. Hence the industry has been charting its own sort of different content dynamic shifts (3/n)
Domestic bucketing for India would be in mobile games from 2015 - Social Casino (Teen Patti) -> Casual Board Games (Ludo/Carrom) -> Battle Royale (PUBG) -> eSports

Something unique to India is RMG (Real Money Gaming) is innovating fast In the last 5 years big shifts have happened in RMG Rummy/Poker -> Sports Fantasy -> Casual Gaming Platforms - massive growth & adoption of these apps have happened despite not being on Google Play. (5/n)
For these shifts to keep happening in India and to create opportunities to build large companies as an ecosystem (Angels/VCs/Corporates/Devs) the need is to support companies that try content innovation. Consumer is maturing faster than the dev ecosystem in India. (6/n) #Gaming
Globally multiple “Gaming focussed funds” (Series A) have come about to track this exciting space, India as well considering the difference of market - funds like Lumikai exists some of the global gaming funds Play Ventures, Makers, BitKraft are also investing in India. (7/n)
The next 5 years are going to be incredibly exciting and important especially for the Indian gaming industry. We have already started to see exits of companies funded in the last decade (Moonfrog/Nazara/Junglee games). (8/n) #Gaming#India
‘Riskier’ bets on creating great games must be taken by founders backed by investors and encouraged by industry bodies/associations - that should be the main thrust going forward everything else is already falling into place. (9/n). #Gaming#India
Needless to say these are my personal thoughts as someone who has worn many hats in the industry. The play of India is universal and unique in its own way - still an optimist to believe there is massive value left to be unlocked in this market. Fin. #Gaming#India (10/10)
