Title : Story of Nachiketa & Yama – The Soul & Brahman
Nachiketa was the son of the sage Vājashravas. He was performing a sacrifice named Viswajet Yajna. In this Yajna, the performer had to give away all his wealth. In ancient times, Cows were designated as valuable.
Cows were also special possessions & hence Vajashrava, desiring a gift from the gods, decided to donate all his cows to Brahmins. Nachiketa was in his teens, and he was observing the sacrificial ritual with innocent interest.
He was surprised to notice that his father was giving away only old & disabled cows unable to give milk.

Nachiketa was very intelligent. He said his father that he has heard in this Yajna, one has to give up all that one possesses. This being the case to whom will you give me?”
Vajashravas did not give any reply. After some time Nachiketa asked again the same question but in vain. He did not get any response from his father.

Again for the third time, Nachiketa repeated the same question.
Vajashravas could not control his temper; he burst out saying to his own son, “I will give you Yama, the God of Death.”

Nachiketa followed the words of his father and went to the kingdom of Death. However, during that time Yama was not present. None dared to admit Nachiketa.
So he waited near the gate for three days and three nights without taking even a drop of water.

When Yama returned & found Nachiketa at his doorstep he felt sad for keeping a Brahmin waiting. He ordered his attendants to fetch holy water to invite and welcome Nachiketa.
After the hospitality offered to Nachiketa, Yama told Nachiketa, “Dear child, I have not done good by keeping you waiting for three days. So I request you to ask for three boons.”
Nachiketa asked Yama:
1. First boon - O Lord, let my father not be anxious about me, and let his anger against me vanish. When I go back to earth, let him recognize me and receive me back gladly.” “Granted son,” said Yama.
2. Second boon - Teach me the proper ritual for the fire sacrifice. Yama agreed and taught Nachiketa the proper ritual for the fire sacrifice.

3. Third boon - Is there indeed a life beyond death.
Yama said, “Boy, do not ask me about matters of life & death. Even the gods are not clear on all points. Ask me something else. I will grant all ur wishes other than this.” Nachiketa persisted and said, “O Yama, I only wish to know about the mysteries of life & death”
Yama tries to offer Nachiketa worldly pleasures so that he may change the nature of his request for the third boon, but Nachiketa insists by stating that all the worldly pleasures are short-lived and do not render long-lasting happiness.
Nachiketa was bold enough saying that one can never reach the eternal through worldly possessions. Therefore he has renounced all desires for worldly pleasures and has come here with the hope of winning the Eternal through the instructions of the God of Death.
It was too difficult for Yama to change the mind of young Nachiketa. So finally, he agreed to tell Nachiketa about the mysteries of life and death.

Yama starts to tell him the truths:
The Self is immortal. It was not born, nor does it die. It did not come out of anything, neither did anything came out of it. Even if this body is destroyed, the soul is not destroyed. Smaller than the smallest and larger than the largest, the Self is living in all beings.
Mere reading of the scriptures or intellectual learning cannot realize Atma. One must discriminate the Atma from the body, which is the seat of desire. It reveals itself to the deserving one. The goal of the wise is to know this Atma.
This body is the chariot, intelligence the driver, the senses are the horses, conscience the rein and the Atma is the lord of the chariot. The Self is superior to body, mind and senses.
Greater than the individual soul is the enveloping super consciousness, the seed of everything in the universe, still greater is the Ultimate Person than whom there is nothing greater. He is the goal of our aspiration.
Once That (Supreme Self) is realized, death loses all its terrors, and the one who has realized becomes immortal.
The path to realization is long & difficult. Inability to realize Brahman results in one is being enmeshed in the cycle of rebirths. Understanding the Self is MOKSHA.

While this is not a STORY. This is my attempt at stitching together a thread on #BhagwadGita for everyone to read.

Today, lets learn about the Premise.
The Gita is a dialogue between the warrior-prince ARJUNA and the Bhagwaan KRISHNA who is serving as his charioteer at the Battle of Kurukshetra fought between Arjuna's family & allies (the Pandavas) and those of the prince DURYODHANA & his family (the Kauravas) and their allies.
This dialogue is recited by the Kauravan counselor Sanjaya to his blind king Dhritarashtra (both far from the battleground) as Krishna has given Sanjaya mystical sight so he will be able to see and report the battle to the king.

For 10 years Raama, Lakshmana and Sita lived quietly amongst the rishis in the Dandakaranya (Dandaka Forest). In Dandakaranya there were many Aashramas, knowing the Trio, all RISHIS welcomed Raama, Lakshmana, Sita. They would stay in one Ashrama after another.
After the passage of 10 years, Raama wished to have Darshan of AGASTYA RISHI.

Words fall short, in praise of AGASTYA RISHI. He was famous in Three Worlds.
It was said that if all the combined wisdom & spiritual Merit between the Himalayas and the Vindhyas was put on one Scale while AGASTYA RISHI (of the South) was made to sit on the other side.

The AGASTYA RISHI side of the Scale will come down by his Weight of Wisdom.

Once, there was a group of 10 friends. They were all travelling. Their Journey meant, they had to cross a river. One of them made boat arrangements & they crossed the river. After a slightly turbulent boat ride, one of them suggested, let's count if everybody is thr.
He started counting. One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine.

Oh My God, we lost one of our mates. There are only Nine of us here.

Surprised, another one does the counting. Even he concluded. There are only nine of us here.
Like this, each one does the same act. Now the group is sad, they have lost a mate in the boat ride.

To the reader, we know - each of the men committed the same mistake. They didn't count Themselves.

Once in Kashi, there was a theatrical performance arranged. The Queen & the entire kingdom participated.

A Character in the Play was to be a Princess (little girl). They had a Casting issue, Queen had a Son (not a daughter).
Queen suggested let's dress him up as a princess. The people around did a fantastic job in dressing up the Prince as a Princess. He looked so pretty that the royal Painter painted a Portrait.

That Portrait was framed, with the proper date and caption "Princess of Kashi".
The Play turned out to be very good.

Years passed. Prince grew in age. He was doing all the macho-Prince like activities (Horse riding, archery, learning combat, learning all the Royal skills of Politics & economics)

Once, Narad Muni - a great devotee of Lord Shri Krishna - met Shri Krishna. They were talking and after some time Narada asked "Prabhu, I was reading and came across this word MAYA. I searched around in a lot of texts, asked my peers and Gurus...
But no one could give me a satisfactory answer. Prabhu, with your profound knowledge. Can you please tell me, What is MAYA?"

Shri Krishna in a warning tone "Narada, are you sure, you are ready to know the meaning of MAYA"
Narada (Determined): Yes, Prabhu. I want to know the meaning of MAYA.

Shri Krishna replied: "Ok Narada I will show you. Let’s lie down here in the shade and I shall tell you everything. But first, Narada, it’s terribly hot; would you get me a cool glass of water?”

Once there was a Washerman (Dhobi). His job was collecting clothes from the entire village, loading them on his Donkey. Taking it to the river. Washing the clothes, drying them in the Sun and Bring back the fresh clothes to each house.
Like any other day, Washerman leaves early morning, along with his Donkey. He collects clothes from each house. Loads it on his Donkey and reaches the nearby river. To his Dismay, today he has forgotten the ROPE with which he tied the Donkey to a Tree, while he gets on his Job.
Terrible beginning to the day (He thinks in his mind). "Without this ROPE, I cannot tie the Donkey & Donkey may wander away. I cannot keep an eye on donkey while washing and drying clothes. And If my Donkey wanders away, How will I deliver the clothes - an entire day wasted"
