We all know about the panda’s transition from near-extinct to otherwise, but what about the less-publicised conservation success stories?

Here are some of the species which were recorded as completely extinct, only to have an unexpected resurrection 👇
Somali Elephant Shrew 🐭

Neither elephant nor shrew, we thought these little guys were gone for good in the 1960s.

But 50 years later 12 were sighted in Djibouti!

Caspian Horse 🐴

Researcher Louise Firouz found the ancient breed in the Iranian mountains, 1,300 years after their supposed extinction.

Firouz worked tirelessly to preserve the species, which is now thriving worldwide.

Bermudan Petrel 🕊

Despite once outnumbering Bermuda’s human population, these birds looked certain to be completely extinct by the 1950s.

But they’re now thriving on Nonsuch Island, and you can even watch them: @BermudaCahowCam

Fernandina Giant Tortoise 🐢

This one took a while! The species was presumed extinct in 1906, until a single female was found in 2019.

The director of @SaveGalapagos called the rediscovery the “most important achievement” of his life.

Lord Howe Island Stick Insect 🌿

There’s a dramatic story behind this species’ disappearance, involving a shipwreck and a plague of rats.

But the creatures were found thriving on a nearby island, decades after their ‘extinction.’

Coelacanth 🐟 🦕

Rediscovering the coelacanth is one of the most important wildlife feats of the 20th century.

These guys predate *dinosaurs* - and were thought to have died out 65 million years ago 🤯

Black-browed Babbler 🕊

Two bird watchers in Borneo were stunned to spot this creature last year, 180 years since it was last sighted.

It’s the longest ‘missing period’ of any Asian animal - and even researchers are stumped by its return.

This trend of using social issues for sales is known as 'woke-washing'.

Bitcoin’s environmental impact is well-documented, with its current carbon output roughly the equivalent of New Zealand’s.

But perhaps renewable energy is the future for cryptocurrencies 👇
A recent thread from @jackdanger highlighted that if Bitcoin’s price ever reaches $1m, its carbon output will be greater than the entirety of the US.

So finding a green solution is a must for the cryptocurrency.

More 👉 cutt.ly/1lnP5c1
Currently only 40% of the total energy used by cryptocurrencies’ complex calculations comes from renewable sources.

So some groups are setting up mining operations in colder climates, where geothermal and hydroelectric power is abundant.
