Unacceptable! Today, the UK government is expected to announce that it will increase its nuclear weapon stockpile cap by 40% - to 260 nuclear warheads. icanw.org/uk_to_increase… Here are 5 reasons why this is such a shocking move (thread)
#1 The UK has 215 nuclear weapons right now, with each warhead estimated to have an explosive power of 100 kilotons or 15x Hiroshima. The UN has said the risk of nuclear weapons use - intentionally or by accident - is higher than ever. These weapons do not make us safe.
#2 Nuclear weapons are illegal now (h/t #nuclearban). Increasing stockpiles violates international law. Every year that nuclear-armed states continue to possess and build nuclear weapons, they must be held responsible for putting the world at risk of a humanitarian catastrophe.
#3 It’s not just the #nuclearban. The United Kingdom is legally obligated under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to pursue disarmament. States will meet soon to review the #NPT ’s success and when they do, the UK will have to answer for its actions.
#4 The UK will also have to answer to its citizens. Nuclear weapons are expensive and unpopular. The UK spent $8.9 billion in one year on its nuclear weapons - funds that could have been used for COVID-19 supplies or to fight climate change.
#5 The majority of people in the UK want the government to join the TPNW. The UK needs to take real steps towards disarmament to join this treaty instead of moving in the wrong direction. cnduk.org/new-poll-shows… @CNDuk @ICAN_UK
Bottom line: In today’s review, the UK could have taken real steps towards nuclear disarmament, in line with the will of its people. Instead, it looks like they’ll chose a new arms race. If you’re in the UK, tell @DominicRaab, @BWallaceMP and @DefenceHQ it’s unacceptable!

What can you do to get your government to join the #nuclearban treaty? Our great partners in the DRC have been on a roll! @CrispalAfrique held an awareness-raising workshop with authorities and called on the government to ratify without delay #thread
They even made the headlines on TV news
📺 Bravo, @CrispalAfrique @MATUKJp @RLubulu @Pierrinaa
Our DRC partners also work with faith groups, @CENCO__RDC, parliamentarians and more to support the treaty. @concern_women brought a group of 10 national @AssembleeN_RDC deputies together to work on the DRC's ratification & make great statements like this one by @MoiseNyarugabo

Amazing news to kick off the weekend: we have not one but TWO ratifications of the #nuclearban treaty, Comoros & the Philippines!👏 Great show of support, a little under a month since the treaty entered into force. Congratulations to all involved @DFAPHL @MaeciDiplomatie #thread
Next to ratifying the #TPNW, Comoros also ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty #CTBT, highlighting just how strongly they support a world without nuclear weapons & the complementary nature of the treaties. @Azali_officiel @Beit_Salam @MaeciDiplomatie @ctbto_alerts
The Philippines was among the first countries to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons back in 2017. It said then: “If we listen to each other, we will hear the same thing: We have no need for nuclear weapons.”

Shinichi Tetsutani, a 3 year and 11 months old boy loved to ride his tricycle.

On the morning of August 6th 1945, he was riding it in front of his home.
A sudden flash appeared. The United States had dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Shinichi and his tricycle were badly burned. Later that night, the almost 4 year old Shinchi died from his injuries.
Shinichi's father thought his son was too young to be buried in a lonely grave away from home, and decided to bury him in the backyard.

As the tricycle had been Shinichi's favorite toy, his father buried it with him. “I wanted him to have something to play with”.

Way to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the #nuclearban treaty: Fiji has just become the 39th state to ratify the #nuclearban treaty! 👏Congratulations @FijiMissionUN 👏 Fiji’s ratification is all the more important because of its experience of the impacts of nuclear testing.
Between 1957 and 1958, Fijian soldiers participated in 9 UK nuclear weapons tests at Malden and Kiritimati (Christmas) Islands. The Pacific region faced 300+ nuclear tests over half a century, which left a terrible human & environmental legacy.
Even today, the regions where the tests occurred remain unsafe to live, grow food, or go fishing. The tests have permanently displaced people & disconnected them from their traditional way of life.

AMAZING NEWS: Kazakhstan just became the 26th state party to #nucleaban treaty & the timing couldn’t have been better - as today marks 70 yrs since the first Soviet nuclear test took place in Semipalatinsk site in Kazakhstan, marking the start of the nuclear arms race. #thread
The Semipalatinsk site aka the Polygon in Kazakhstan was the site where nearly a quarter of the world’s nuclear tests took place & harmed over 1.5 million Kazakh people and had terrible consequences on the environment.
The #nuclearban treaty calls for assistance, support & rehabilitation of those affected by nuclear weapons testing and use + outlaws everything to do with these weapons.Check this out to see how you can support the #nuclearban treaty ➡️ bit.ly/2HcfNbi
