Today we released a new policy brief updating our research on @ICEgov’s immigrant detention contracting and inspection system and calling on the Biden administration to #CutTheContracts as a critical step to #EndDetention
The South Texas Family Residential Center (Dilley), Karnes County Residential Center & Hutto Detention Center, all in TX; the Berks Family Detention Center in PA; Etowah in AL; Irwin in GA; Otero in NM; ICA-Farmville in VA; and Adelanto and Mesa Verde in CA
We also talk about the corruption occurring across the ICE detention contracting system, including the ways ICE and private prison companies exploit “pass-through” contracts with local government’s to sidestep procurement laws #CutTheContracts
This system is deadly & costly: 19 people died in immigration detention in FY20. Meanwhile, @USGAO found last May that U.S. taxpayers were paying ~$20.5 million/mo in empty bed space because of @ICEgov’s corrupt and wasteful contracting practices
The corruption doesn’t just stop at the #FirstTen. There are hundreds of detention centers with ongoing contracts and horrifying inspection reports all over the country--there may even be one in your community! freedomforimmigrants.org/map
NIJC’s Transparency Project has been using the Freedom of Information Act to request as many contracts and inspection reports as we can, with documents pertaining to over 100 facilities. immigrantjustice.org/transparency/d…
Many of these inspection reports have been annotated to highlight violations, everything from substandard medical care to dirty facilities. Find out if there’s a detention center in your community, & get involved in the fight to #CutTheContracts. documentcloud.org/app?q=organiza…

The #DreamAndPromise Act will provide long overdue protections to DACA, TPS, and DED recipients. Disappointingly, the legislation also contains harmful criminalization bars that will exclude many immigrant youth. We need bold and inclusive legislation that leaves no one behind.
DHS continues to grow its massive immigration detention system using a web of corrupt contracts that breed impunity for abuses. We echo @DetentionWatch's call: Time to #CutTheContracts & shut down the #FirstTen immigrant detention centers.
Watchdog agencies have long documented improper contracting practices & farcical inspections practices in the immigration detention system that is plagued with systemic racism & abuse. #CutTheContracts#FirstTen#CommunitiesNotCages
The Trump admin has unleashed a torrent of final regulations and policies targeting asylum seekers - 7 rules in 7 days. Each rule will have devastating consequences. Here’s why: (1/9)
First, DHS finalized a plan to send asylum seekers to El Salvador, mirroring an agreement w/ Guatemala that endangered 1000+ mostly women & children. @NIJC@CGRShastings@ACLU & @humanrights1st challenged this violation of US asylum obligations. tinyurl.com/ybxstqk6 (2/9)
Next, DOJ imposed a fee on asylum applications for the *first time ever* to deter asylum seekers from seeking protection. They also increased fees up to 800% for appeals. @NIJC@CGRS@supportKIND@quinnemanuel filed a suit today. tinyurl.com/yah5jaxr (3/9)
UPDATE: Today a CA federal court issued final order in our lawsuit w/ @ACLU_SoCal ruling immigration detainers issued by ICE out of its Pacific Enforcement Response Center violate the Constitution & are null & void (even if PERC moves to another state). immigrantjustice.org/court_cases/go… 1/
Immigration detainers are requests ICE sends to local and state law enforcement asking them to keep immigrants detained after their authority expires so that ICE can come and take them into custody. 2/
The court finds that detainers issued out of PERC, which ICE uses after business hours and on weekends to send detainer requests to 42 states, violate the 4th Amendment because they assess a person’s removability based solely on a database check. 3/
