BitClout is creating a new category—most just don't see it yet.

As with any early-stage, radically different, boundary-pushing project, Twitter is already calling BitClout a "scammy" project, and a "Black Mirror episode" manifested.

Here's what I see instead 👇
1/ Quick TL;DR history

BitClout is a super-stealth blockchain project where people can buy, sell, and trade Creator Coins—coins that represent the perceived value of a creator.

- @elonmusk has a coin
- @chamath has a coin
- As of today, I have a coin

Anyone can have a coin.
2/ Rumor has it there are some pretty big players involved (I won't name names yet), and BitClout has srs VC backing.

Like most high-flying projects that catapult out of Silicon Valley's elite network, BitClout has also been built & launched in 100% stealth mode.

Not Googleable
3/ Here's why BitClout is so different

Earlier this year, I was FASCINATED by the $GME story that unfolded (and is still unfolding). It showed 1) the power of retail traders, and 2) new asset class = "meme stonks."

I even wrote a viral thread about it:

4/ Funny enough, "meme stonks" have been around forever.

Dot-com companies in the 90s going public off Internet hype were meme stonks. Same w/ early-stage crypto projects 2014+.

Investors, whether they admit it or not, don't ALWAYS bet on business fundamentals.
5/ BitClout is Naming & Claiming a new category of assets:

Social Currency.

How did we get here?

V1: If you want to bet on (or bet against) the future earnings/value of a company, commodity, or basket of assets, you do so on a stock exchange.
6/ V2: If you want to bet on (or against) the future earnings/value of a company, etc., FROM YOUR PHONE, w/ $0 fees, you do so on Robinhood.
7/ Now, with the rise of NFTs, if you want to bet on (and eventually, against) the future earnings/value of an ARTIST, you can do so on platforms like @withFND, @nbatopshot, @opensea, and so on.

@EddieWouldGrow @lochhead and I wrote about this here:

categorypirates.substack.com/p/the-future-j…
8/ But where do you go if you want to bet on (and probably eventually, even against) the future PERCEIVED VALUE of a Creator?

That's the category BitClout is creating.

Again: this human condition already exists.

BitClout is just Naming & Claiming it.
9/ DraftKings, OnlyFans, even Patreon paved the way:

Now, I can bet @elonmusk keeps being the 🐐 of memes

I can bet @AmandaCerny gets more famous over time

I can even own my own coin, and have people take early-stage bets on my continued growth and career as a writer.
10/ Add all the Creator Economy juice on top, and BitClout makes perfect sense.

But I see all this as gravy on top: tipping to creators, exclusive access to fans who hold your coin, etc.

The bigger picture here is this:

The Social Currency category didn't exist—until now.
11/ Conclusion: category creators are asymmetric bets.

BitClout could fail miserably. Just like Airbnb ("You want to let strangers stay in your house?") could have failed miserably.

Betting early on category creators is why the upside is dramatic & downside is cost of capital
12/ But a bet on BitClout isn't just / only a bet on the project/network.

It's a bet on the CATEGORY of People Betting On The Perceived Value Of Creators In The World.

And if Bitclout create & successfully design that category, they win.
13/ Category design is how you see the future before anyone else.

Writing something worth reading is hard.

Writing something people will PAY to read is even harder.

In 2020, I launched my paid newsletter, Daily Writing Habits, and made $10,000 yr 1 (a little less than ~$1,000 per month).

9 tips for starting a paid newsletter of your own 👇💸
1/ Give 99% away for free / monetize the last 1%

Most writers treat their paid newsletter as 99% paid, 1% free.

Do the opposite.

Make your paid newsletter your Greatest Hits. But keep creating free & compelling content elsewhere.

dailywritinghabits.substack.com/p/give-away-99…
2/ Speak directly to the reader (like a pen pal)

One of the greatest sales copywriters ever, Gary Halbert, started every newsletter with "Dear Friend,"

I loved that—so I stole it.

I imagine I'm writing every letter to 1 person.

Make it personal.

Building an audience is not a goal.

It’s an outcome.

So, here are 7 actionable ways to achieve that goal to produce that outcome 👇🏼
1/ Create without expectation

People can sense your intentions. And if your intention is to “build an audience” to quickly extract ($$$) value, you will repel more than you attract.

Give generously. Expect little in return.
2/ Keep your promises

If you say you’re going to write something new every day, do it. Show up. Let your actions speak louder than your words/promises/public announcements.

📊 The New Way Writers Are Gaining Traction In The Digital Age 📊

Since 2014, I have been writing every single day on the Internet.

That's not "the secret" to success.

The REAL secret is the strategy I used to pick high-performing topics.

Here's the framework ✍️📊📈👇
Step 1: Write, publish, and gather data points.

Every time you publish something on the internet, you are generating a data point.

Write 1 thing per year, that's 1 data point.

Write 365 things per year, that's 365 data points.

More publishing = more data.
Step 2: Every 10-20 data points, look for trends.

Writing 1 thing on the internet and deciding whether or not you are a "successful writer" is pointless. You're examining data in a vacuum.

Instead, look for trends among data points.

Here's how 👇

🚢 The Inspiration For Write The Ship 🚢

At the start of the year, @dickiebush created the most impactful Daily Writing Challenge Twitter has ever seen: Ship 30 for 30.

In just 3 months, hundreds of writers/Shippers have gone through the program.

But, what's next?
📈 Why Data Is So Important For Writers In The Digital Age 📈

"The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck" started as a viral blog post.

"Atomic Habits" was written after YEARS of @JamesClear gathering reader data by writing online.

The most successful writers today all use data.

🚢 Atomic Essays Republishing Framework 🚢

1. Write Atomic Essay
2. Post image on Twitter
3. (Bonus) Copy/paste text as thread
4. Find relevant Question on Quora. Copy/paste Atomic Essay + image.
5. Copy/paste again on Medium.
6. Again on LinkedIn
7. Win

Guide below ✍️🚢👇
Step 1: Write Atomic Essay

I really enjoy writing right inside the Figma template. It helps give me a good sense of exactly how much "real estate" I have/have left before my time us up and I'm out of space.

Once finished, I export the image and send to my phone on Slack.
Step 2: Post image on Twitter

Before I publish my Atomic Essay on Twitter, I use the Edit/Photo Markup function on the iPhone to highlight standout sentences.

These are usually power-phrases: things the reader skims and thinks, "That's interesting," prompting them to read more.

💸 The 5 Revenue Streams Every Writer Should Build For Themselves 💸

Today I have ~9 different revenue streams for myself, but these 5 are the big ones that have fueled my career for the past 5 years (and allowed me to quit my 9-5 & go all-in on writing) 👇🧵
1/ Writing as a service

This is without question the easiest revenue stream to build, and where most writers start.

The first big jump in my income as a writer came from ghostwriting. Once you learn how to provide writing as a service (and get paid $$), you're off to the races
2/ Write books/guides/etc.

My 2nd paid product online was a $30 "How To Become A Top Writer On Quora" course. My 1st was a eBook series called "Skinny to Shredded."

Create assets that can be sold infinitely at scale. Small numbers ($$$) add up over time.
