Thank you to @Junie4Boulder @rachelkfriend @marydoloyoung @AaronBrockett12 @bobyatesboulder & the rest of City Council for appointing me to #Boulder's Human Relations Commission last night. I'm grateful for the opportunity and look forward to working with my fellow commissioners.
In my application, I talked about my desire to work on racial equity issues. It was surreal/sobering to be watching council proceedings at the same time as I was reading news about the murders in Atlanta.
It's no secret that my biggest apprehension about moving back to Boulder was the lack of racial diversity. It's also no secret that the reason I started working on #DEI issues at my kids' school is b/c of a racist gesture made in front of my 1st grade son on the playground.
So, today, while I am glad about my HRC appointment, the very problems that the HRC is meant to work on weigh heavy on my heart. #StopAAPIHate
I've been having a very hard time writing my own words about everything going on. Thankfully, there are others out there who are far more articulate than I. For starters, see what #CUBoulder's own @DrJenHo wrote in CNN this evening.
For more context on the rising violence against the AAPI community, see this NBC report that was published yesterday morning, before the murders in Atlanta. nbcnews.com/news/asian-ame…
Here's @cathyparkhong in @TheAtlantic on why things are different now for Asian Americans. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
And here's @huahsu in @NewYorker a few weeks ago, as insightful as ever. newyorker.com/culture/cultur…
I am grateful to @nhannahjones, who strikes hard at the myth that Asian and Black communities are at tension. When we stand together, we are stronger.
And here's a great thread from @KorematsuCtr on the historical and legal roots of anti-Asian racism. (Fred Korematsu, of course, was the man who spoke out against the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII)
@KorematsuCtr There is so much more I could amplify -- and likely will in the coming days. But for tonight, I will leave you with these last two links. For parents, how are you teaching your kids to be antiracist?
@nicolesjchung said all the words I've ever wanted to muster every time I hear about a racist incident involving a child. slate.com/human-interest…
And for those who want to go deeper, I'd recommend this one-hour recording of a seminar on talking to kids about Asian American identity and racism. #StopAAPIHate
