Alright. I'm on the @blackvotecanada webinar with provincial leaders speaking to the Black community. @CBCAdrianH is moderating. I'm asking an audience question. Here we go. @AndreaHorwath is first. Lemme live-tweet this 🪡
She called out @fordnation for not showing up and I can’t disagree. She talks the unequal impact of the pandemic, systemic racism. Yet doesn’t talk about the police. She tells us that Ford doesn’t give a fuck about Black people. Says the @OntarioNDP does #ontpoli
The @OntarioGreens dude needs better audio. But also calls out @fordnation for not showing up. But does talk about the police. Spends a lot of time acknowledging his privilege in the face of Black ppl’s experiences. This is not a value judgement just reporting #ontpoli

The dean of @TheBuschSchool at @CatholicUniv, where I attend @CUACanonLaw, just launched an anti-"woke" video for Trumpist PAC @CatholicVote. In it, he explicitly identifies himself by his CUA title. So he's appearing in a partisan video as a CUA rep. 1/4
CUA Busch School Dean Abela slams #DEI, #BLM, and, of course, the rainbow flag. He puts scare quotes around "racist" & rags "progressives" for boycotting Georgia over its voting law.

As a pro-life, pro-chastity, pro-marriage Catholic and a grad student at CUA, I'm appalled. 2/4
OK, it's not shocking. @NapaInstitute, Koch, etc., own @TheBuschSchool. Race-baiting insurrectionist @AbbyJohnson was welcomed at CUA, & an image honoring George Floyd's memory was stolen twice. CUA's ban on LGBTQ groups extends to straight allies. ncronline.org/news/people/na… 3/4

A new day, a new chapter. Namely... #UnsilencingMyWorkplace Chapter 5: The Search. This story is truly a fine wine. I'd say this particular vintage has a full-bodied bouquet of dysfunctional governance with underlying notes of racism and egotism.
I need to be vague about how the story began because otherwise it would be too identifying for vulnerable people. Suffice it to say that at some point, my department was hiring (we do this a lot).
Also suffice it to say, one particular member of the department had a preferred candidate and tried to rig the outcome before the search even started. I *think* the preference was because of shared research area. Not sure, but in any case, it's not central to the story.

#BlackHistoryMonth is an opportunity to understand Black histories, going beyond stories of racism and slavery to spotlight Black success and high achievement. However, the focus on the past sometimes causes us to overlook the history that Black people make right now today.
There are times that Black History walks among us and we fail to recognize its greatness. My grandmomma used to say, “Flowers are for the living.” That is to say, can’t no dead people smell no flowers! Why do we wait for people to die before we honor them?
Let’s honor them now! While they can appreciate it! And they can know that we appreciate them! And sometimes, Black History is as simple as representation.

Throwing this out there in hopes that someone can relate bc sometimes this experience is lonely and confusing …
I just went to apply for a #diversity training award and then stopped. Canceled my application. This is not the first time I’ve done this in my graduate career. 🧵
I am half Persian. My father fled to this country during the Iranian revolution w/ no money in his pocket. My mother is from Missouri. She and my father met, fell in love despite not speaking each others’ language, and eloped after 2 months of being together.
They were cut off from their families bc of this. And my father faced awful, violent discrimination in MO (read: car being flipped over and set on fire). Still, they persisted and fostered a loving environment for my brother and me. It wasn’t always stable, but it was loving.

To the Black Tech Community. They call me "The Jobfather" because I get people offers they don't want to refuse.

I have a personal mission to help as many Black people get new jobs in Tech as possible.

It's an amazing industry where we are severely underrepresented.
I've put together some resources you can use to help you on your Tech Job search.

Directness & saying what you mean is important. The receiver also needs to be ready to tolerate this. Society & business places tend to prefer the passive aggressive so being direct does invoke blowback.
There is particular social cost to being direct & going against social norms

if your optics/demographics invoke mental models …say of expected discretion, “civility”, or “be kind” or “softness”

OR

if mental model invoked is “angry Black woman/man”

fastcompany.com/90413951/women…
“Be kind” is red flag: it identifies the passive aggressive shushing/shaming people who are threatened by @candor & perceive directness as aggression. It’s a fixed mindset trait or a negative consequence when empathy/emotions overindexed in ways to block growth & learning.

As a #vaccine & #publichealth advocate I *always* respond to any question with sincerity. Since I got put on lists of pro-#DEI/#equity/#BLM docs to target is anonymous accounts will “@“ me then when I respond in good faith it is tallied as my “harassing” = manufacture fake #data.
This is a deliberate anti-#publichealth #SciComm strategy to bully, harass (but then claim opposite), intimidate, & drive out

Sadly, it is successful

Hundreds of public health officials have left jobs, mislabeled by #disinformation smears

Those of us with immigrant backgrounds have NO idea what debt we owe these women for risking their lives so some of us can shop at Whole Foods with other suburban moms, then drive a Lexus home to ride on a Peloton, & think only our own hard work created this access to success.
Those of us who are Muslim have a partial experience of what it is like to be made the face of threat and danger and vilified.

…But “the West “still wants to “save” Muslim women… make us a token or mascot of saviorism & evidence of being a shining city on the hill.
In comparison, the black woman doesn’t have that opportunity to be paraded around as the most recent woman “saved” & celebrated - the tropes are universally harmful & exploitative/pejorative vs Black women in society/media + centuries of economic barriers/being exploited.

The U.S. only ever led on “elite feminism”

elitist, controlling anti-woman American women will be the death of any small prior progress in gender equity

Women need to stop with the required solidarity or forced support of fellow women who harm

Actions matter, not anatomy
The maternal mortality rate, especially for Black women is appalling. Has American feminism ever concerned itself with deaths of fellow women? No. Count number of women in C-suite (who align with anti-justice incentives) and fight for privileged access of a few. Trickle down.
Even as a nation of elitist feminism, have these women, mostly wives of or daughters of, become President? No. That would require a woman having value or respected as an individual, as opposed to American culture of women valued or gaining access for their relationships to men.

Institutional silencing of scientists & academics needs to stop.

Public universities playing politics to protect 💰 from state budgets comes at expense of academic integrity or protecting the public in a #pandemic that has killed >700K Americans, 1:500

There is a false claim #DEI silences professors, academic freedom, freedom of speech. No, those who previously confidently said racist, sexist, ableist, anti-#mentalhealth things face accountability. Loss of “freedom of speech” =getting jailed/disappearing businessinsider.com/china-coronavi…
Having to hear “that is racist” is not loss of freedom of speech. Is identification of the content.

You can choose to feel “personally attacked” or you could choose to improve. Must identify racism as it drives harm, death, wrong dx

The day after my pregnancy-loss I showed up to work like …everything was fine. Did you?

[THREAD] #LeadershipMatters #DEI
After realizing the pain I was in, I communicated with my (amazing) boss that I was having a “medical issue”, which he never questioned (blessed). But to this day, I have never shared to him, or my colleagues who I spent the majority of my life, what I was going through. Why?
A. Pregnancy-loss, fertility are issues often not discussed in the workplace. Even though the impact can be physical & mental.
B. Most Managers are not equipped/trained to talk about these issues.
C. Most Companies do not consider these issues in equity & inclusion initiatives.

My thoughts on the new #UniversityofAustin
1.) I get why people are concerned about what's happening in academia. I am too.
2.) I am not sure starting a new school is the answer
3.) the answer is for good people to come together and TALK about #DEI. #cancelculture #University 1/
The reason there is such a backlash is because people do not know how to talk about race, racism, and the intersections with gender and sexuality in America. So, instead they go on the attack. They demean. They harass. They marginalize. They deny reality. #CancelCulture 2/
American universities cannot become a place where the "diversity statement" runs the community. It has to be one of the spokes in the wheel that makes a university an open, free, welcoming, healthy space for academic freedom and discourse for ALL. 3/

So the first thread I want to do is tech/applications that have made my science easier and more accessible. Some of them are paid (not always accessible), but I'll try to offer a free version that I've used that may not be as great but worked for me. 1/
