This morning, @TheRoot email box is full of people calling us the real racists while also saying shit like WHITE POWER and calling us niggers.
Good morning. How is your Thursday so far?
But seriously, The Root is a Black online media site. We report and discuss topics from a Black perspective.
If you are uninterested in that, there are plenty of other "legacy" news sites that only talk about things from the white point of view. You can go read them.
Why do y'all get a battery in your back and want to come and argue with us about our coverage?
Media in this country is white-centered. That's why no one is talking about this:
Objectivity in journalism is a myth. I am a Black woman living in America. It absolutely is the lens I view this country through. How could it not be?
You can play that objectivity "both sides" shit all you want. That's how we end up with people like Maggie Haberman and Bari Weiss doing the stupid shit they do.
So-called objectivity enables a rhetoric that erases the harms of institutionalized racism, white supremacy and white privilege.
I have Asian colleagues who are hurting right now behind what's going on. One of them pointed out something so specific this morning, I almost started crying.
How come none of these outlets reporting on the shooting in Georgia have attempted to speak with any of the workers who survived at these spas?
Why are only Asian outlets doing that work?
These institutions have historically been set up to silence certain voices. That's a fact.
You need look no further than the fact that a lot of the larger media organizations, organizations that exist because of the First Amendment, suppress free speech in their employees with strict social media policies.
You want us on your team, but you only want us to speak truth to the power that suits you.
Fuck all that. I am very grateful to work at a publication where everyone looks like me, understands my struggle and can relate to what I go through on a daily basis.
I didn't know this could really and truly be a thing when I was in J school.
Anyway, here is an email that just came through our Tips email box. It was addressed to @DamonYoungVSB in response to his post yesterday, "Whiteness Is a Pandemic."
Dear Mr. Young,
You are naive about the Nigger. Without White people, this world would be a place of people too lazy to turn on their car's turn- signals, improper English, obesity in elementary school, running around trying to pay with $100.00 bills
, taking up 90% of our prisons, disrespecting the police, disrespecting teachers, talking all day in class, yards unkept, starting a used car lot in their yards, leaving trash in parking lots, leaving baby shit diaper rolls in parking lots, having sex in the Walmart parking lot,
putting coffee in their sugar, putting eggs in their salt (before even tasting such eggs), clogging up the doctor's offices with all their health problems, and generally turning everything they touch into shit.
Yes, with only 12% of the U.S. population according to the 2020 U.S. Census - the Nigger causes 90% of all the problems in America. Thus, if the world woke up tomorrow and there were no Niggers ... all would celebrate ... except fat White women.
How about all of you getting a real job like working behind a shovel, axe, or 5-lb. Mattock all day - instead of putting out your Nigger mind's garbage into the world.
The person signed their full name, but I won't share it here.
But please. Tell me more about how WE are the REAL RACISTS.
If you have a meltdown reading Black people speaking about their experience in AmeriKKKa, baby, you have some work to do.
And that shit is not our mother fucking problem.
PERIOD.
Anyway, here is my latest for The Root. You are probably going to be mad at this one too.
There are a lot of boomers and cuspers taking issue with the fact I said Gen X is the first generation to have existed in both the analog and digital world.
So hey guys. I have mirrors in my house. Like all over my house. I love looking at myself in mirrors. And because of that, I know I'm fat. You aren't breaking any new ground using that as an insult, just FYI. But if it makes you feel better, have at it I guess.
The way my self esteem is set up, the only opinion on my looks that truly matters to me is my own.
If you have watched me any amount of time here, you already know I have no shortage of confidence.
As a Black woman on Twitter who encounters this multiple times a day every single day 365 days a year, I want to show you guys something. Thread:
I saw Gen X trending, and when I clicked the trend, it was all about Fox News calling on us to "cancel" "cancel culture." I thought it was funny because the boomers tried to cancel everything we liked as teens, and so I tweeted this:
For the most part, people got it, agreed, laughed, RT etc Of course, there were some who either willfully or ignorantly misunderstood my point. Those (mostly white) people didn't even try to disagree in a reasonable way. They immediately began calling me names, disparaging me etc
