I am going to Atlanta this weekend to preach at the church where MLK pastored when he called for a “revolution of values.” Georgia is showing the nation how desperately this message is needed.
Since King’s assassination, Republicans have used the language of “biblical values” to pit white Christians against non-white neighbors, betting that they could hold onto power by building a white voting bloc.
But demographics & expanded voting rights changed the balance of power. Lies that were told to white Christians are exploding in violence like we saw in the young white man’s attack against Asian women this week. But the same extremism drives voter suppression in GA statehouse.
Dr. King said in 1965 that the most powerful force in this nation would be white & Black uniting in a fusion coalition to transform the South. A glimpse of that reality in GA’s special election has elicited a vicious backlash.
But remember: the anti-democratic forces of violence & voter suppression don’t attack us b/c we are weak, but b/c we’re strong. We must stand together & work together now more than ever for the revolution of values that can revive democracy.

The American Rescue Plan that President Biden will sign tomorrow could increase income for some of America’s poor & low-income families by 20% this year. This is part of the bold action Biden promised the #PoorPeoplesCampaign last September.
While we have more work to do to make these changes permanent & address longterm inequality, President Biden & Vice President Harris have already helped shift the conversation about what is possible.
Not a single Republican was willing to join Democrats to pass this legislation, but what VP Harris said to our PPC Assembly 2 years ago is still true: ending poverty is a moral issue that can unite Americans & lift us all.
As the Poor People’s Campaign continues to pressure the U.S. Senate to include a minimum wage of $15/hour in any COVID relief, Sen. Joe Manchin has requested a meeting with the campaign.
The spirit of Julian Bond, Bob Moses, Diane Nash & John Lewis are speaking to us even today in this impeachment trial. I hear them saying that no matter what happens with this partisan vote, don’t give up your principle & keep fighting for justice no matter what.
The Republicans who chose Trump & his senseless lies & violence must now be impeached and removed by the vote of the people in 2022.
Democrats can see clearly the Republicans are not serious about governing or caring for the people. They must use now their majority to pass what is best for the people.
Let's not forget it was a woman from Harlan County, Kentucky, Florence Patton Reece, who wrote the song "Which Side Are You On?" in the 1930s. When we push for a living wage, we stand on their shoulders.
Come all of you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how that good old union
Has come in here to dwell
Chorus
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
To President Biden & Democratic senators, Don’t turn back on $15/hr minimum wage in the rescue plan. Turning back now will betray 62 million poor & low-wage workers. And it will be perceived by many as lying to the American people & going back on a campaign promise.
57 years ago at the March on Washington, MLK called for a $2/hr minimum wage. Today that would be $15/hr.
America is already 57 years overdue, and, for Black Americans, it took us 400 years to get from $0 to $7.25/hr. We can’t wait anymore.
Democrats, you saw Trump give trillions to wealthy corporations. We cannot watch you go backwards on living wages for essential workers, low-wage workers, and tip workers, all those who are essential.
