19th Mar. 2003, forces led by USA and including UK, Australia and Poland start the war in Iraq, ironically calling it "Operation Iraqi Freedom". #iraqwar#NeverForget
Pres. Bush announcing begining of hostilities
The casus belli was, "Iraq possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction and therefore the world needed saving". United Nations Security Council resolution 678, passed in Nov. 1990, allowed the use of force to end Iraq occupation of Kuwait and RESTORE INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND SECURITY.
A recent resolution 1441passed in Nov. 2002, required Iraq to allow inspections by UNMOVIC and IAEA and if there was further Iraqi breach reported to the Council, the matter would return to the Council for discussions as to next cause of action. #illegalwar
And so begun the invasion under a cloud of illegality and lack of international support.
An attempt to kill Saddam with a bombing decapitation strike failed, ground troops moved in on the second day from Kuwait.
Opening bombing strikes #shockandawe
On hindsight, its clear the war was based on lies, no weapons of mass destruction were discovered. The human cost has been terrible, regional peace was destabilised with on going implications till date. Did the world learn a lesson? doubtful.... #nolessonslearned#stopwars
