Big day in #estimates today. I found out from AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw that the Brittany Higgins investigation had received 32 referrals of information to their investigation, and the AFP are actively pursuing six matters. 1/7
During my questioning of the Secretary of the Department of Parliamentary Services we learned that there had been no changes to parliamentary security protocols since Brittany Higgins’ allegations came to light. 2/7 #estimates
We also learned that a review of security procedures and policies - some of which haven’t been updated since the early 2000s! - had been started in early 2018 but had not yet recommended any changes to security guard duty of care. 3/7 #estimates
PM&C Secretary Phil Gaetjens revealed that nearly 2 weeks ago he’d paused his inquiry into what PMO staff knew about Brittany Higgins’ alleged rape. He says AFP Commissioner Kershaw asked him to – which Kershaw denies, and which PM withheld from parliament. 4/7 #estimates
Gaetjens will be guided by AFP about when to resume his inquiry without prejudicing investigation. Given differing accounts I secured an assurance he’d call Kershaw today - so inquiry could potentially re-start today. But PM will find a way to squash it, no doubt. 5/7 #estimates
And the deputy secretary of the PM’s department confirmed that the new hotline established for parliamentary staff needing assistance around workplace abuse or assault was staffed by trauma-informed psychologists. 6/7 #estimates
She also said she would consider my suggestion to hold a joint sitting of parliament to deliver training on safe workplace practices and send a message about the importance of cleaning up parliament’s culture. 7/7 #estimates

Greens women will walk out of the senate on Monday as part of the national #MarchForJustice protests, which are calling for gender equality and an end to gendered violence. We'll join demonstrators at the Canberra rally on the lawns outside Parliament House. @womensmarchaus 1/4
These last few weeks have made every woman in the country angry, sad and exhausted. The government’s reaction to allegations of sexual assault in Parliament House and allegations of rape against the Attorney-General have left us disgusted and fed up. #March4Justice 2/4
The PM has made it clear that he doesn’t believe women, will only think about the impact on us when his wife reminds him of it, and will go to any length to protect his mates. #March4Justice 3/4

The consent education program trumpeted by Education Minister Alan Tudge this morning is a weak-kneed response to the roar of fury from women and girls everywhere. 1/8
It wasn't new. It was a re-announcement of a $2.8 million online program the Morrison government unveiled in 2019. A program that has so far, in two years, apparently failed to deliver any education materials for schools. 2/8
In the face of a crisis of misogyny and sexual violence, this government has served up a reheated program from two years ago that was underwhelming at the time and seems utterly inadequate now. 3/8

The Greens are moving to suspend standing orders to discuss why the PM said he’d be participating the the Global Climate Summit, when diplomatic sources revealed Australia wasn’t invited to participate because of our dismal inaction on climate change.
What we need to hear from the Govt is whether the PM misled parliament in response to questions about whether we were invited to the global climate summit or not?
We understand that correspondence has been sent to the PM saying we are not invited to the global climate summit. We call for the Minister representing the PM to attend the Senate at 2pm today to explain whether we have been invited, and table any correspondence.

BREAKING: I just moved to suspend standing orders to debate my Parliamentary Standards Bill. Women deserve to feel safe and heard in Parliament, as they should in any workplace.
“It is long past time that women in this building feel safe... We’ve called on the PM to show some leadership and to take action. All we’ve heard is that this isn’t his problem, these issues are in the past, and there is a process.”
“Well we took a good look at this process and it’s full of holes. The process does not have any implications for the alleged abuser. There is no power for the Finance dept to actually discipline or have any other consequence for a MP or MOP(s) Act employee...”

ESTIMATES: Earlier today, I had a whole 11 mins to interrogate the Environment Dept on Adani, managing conflicts of interest, New Acland coal mine and the Browse Basin gas pipeline, and the findings were revelatory; a thread:
The Auditor General noted that the Enviro Dept didn't have a policy to deal with conflicts of interests, so the Dept created one. BUT the Dept isn’t looking back in time to see if previous enviro approvals were affected by conflicts, which seems... like a massive oversight imho
Despite Auditor General concerns, the Enviro Dept did NOT develop special additional measures to address conflicts where staff return from secondments - or even ‘placements’ with the Minerals Council writing their policy on watering down enviro laws 😳
