“Turn their gaze away from Him & toward themselves. Keep them watching their own minds & trying to produce *feelings* there by the action of their own wills...” —(The demon Screwtape on how to misdirect a person’s prayers) C.S. Lewis
“When they meant to ask Him for charity, let them instead start trying to manufacture charitable feelings for themselves. When they meant to pray for courage, let them really be trying to feel brave...” #Lewis #Screwtape
“When they say they are praying for forgiveness, let them be trying to feel forgiven. Teach them to estimate the value of each prayer by their success in producing the desired feeling...” #Lewis #Screwtape
“Never let them suspect how much success or failure of that kind depends on whether they are well or ill, fresh or tired, at the moment.” #Screwtape

Are you waiting to obey until you feel? Where in the Word are we instructed to keep the commandments “when the feeling strikes”?
Have you ever stayed in the pew on fast & testimony Sunday bc the Spirit didn’t punch you in the feels, so you decided you were off the hook that day? God commanded us to share our testimonies. It tends to be an easier task w/o the gut punch. Why not obey w/o being compelled?
Have you ever stood from your knees & thought you received no answer bc your emotions didn’t flare up in the moment? Have you ever hesitated to do what’s clear in scripture bc *today* your heart wasn’t all that touched?
Emotions are nice. But they’re a by-product of faith & obedience, not a litmus for the quality of a spiritual prompting. Before all else, God instructs that we obey bc he told us to, bc we trust him. That’s the faith part. Emotions are the patently-unreliable extra, not the rule.
The rule is, keep the commandments. The Holy Ghost *will* tell us in our hearts & minds what we need when we need it. But he knows what we already know. We’re responsible to do what we know to do, w/o immediate emotional gratification, w/o a regular dopamine infusion.
The next time an opportunity arises to do what’s obvious, try doing it. Don’t wait for the Spirit to ask you specifically. If the Lord’s task needs doing, give it no thought at all, just stand up and move your body. And then do it again next time.
Watch how quickly the conscious habit of uncompelled obedience to the obvious improves your reception of spiritual promptings. Watch how alert you become to God’s voice when he sees you intend to serve w/o being carried, when you decide not to withhold belief until he stirs you.
Blessed is he that believes who has not seen. Blessed is he that is humble when he was not compelled to be. Blessed are you when you do your duty out of pure gratitude for what you’ve already seen & received, even if you never feel again.
But fear not—the joyful doing of eternal duties w/o compulsion inevitably, in the Lord’s own time, produces a depth of feeling unmatched by any earthly emotion. The pure love of Christ will fill you, from time to time AND as a thread of gold woven through your every moment.
This is the gift of standing & doing—a firm foundation under your feet & a life overflowing with charitable feeling. But having his heart in you is the culminating product. *Your* immediately-inspired emotions are not required for obedience.

When this was released, it seemed rather dull to me. Why a proclamation abt practices already common to most of the civilized world? But here we are. & here I am, tweeting it all:

The Family: A Proclamation to the World

First Presidency & Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
Sept 1995
“We, The First Presidency & the Council of the 12 Apostles, of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man & a woman is ordained of God & that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.”
“All Human Beings—male & female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, & as such, each has a divine nature & destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity & purpose.”

“Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” John 20

“To some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know....To others it is given to believe, that they also might have eternal life” DC46.
It’s human to value concrete knowledge over faith or belief (we’re concrete beings living in a physical world, after all.) But God values your belief above your knowledge. How much nobler to trust him for what you can’t see nor touch. How humble & submissive to his will.
One who believes but has yet to obtain the fulness of knowledge he desires may find himself feeling inadequate in his testimony. (What a grave lie satan plants in a heart’s fertile soil!) God hears not résumés but prayers. He counts not what we witness but what we do.

“Woe unto you, scribes & Pharisees, hypocrites!” (Matt23) Now as then, we live in an impossibly complex social system set up to virtue-signal & cancel people. No one is left out—there are rules that reach anyone. Why? Bc scared people don’t speak. They are easily led. #HearHim
How did Christ handle it? He spoke the truth anyway. He valued eternal law over personal comfort. He rebuked the oppressors & defended the weak. He abandoned all thought of reputation, even until they took his life. Will we exhibit the smallest part of his courage to follow him?
This life is made to cancel us. If you haven’t been cancelled by the world yet, now is a good time try harder. If you find yourself at ease with society, examine your priorities. What can you do today to remind God you’re on his side, & remind the devil you’re not his friend?

“Your spirit is an eternal entity. Your Heavenly Father has known you for a very long time. You, as His son or daughter, were chosen by Him to come to earth at this precise time, to be a leader in His great work on earth.” #RussellMNelson
He has known you for a very long time, and you have known *him* for a very long time. He hasn’t forgotten you; he watches every moment & assists even when you don’t notice. You, on the other hand, had to forget. That’s the test. To win is to remember, embrace, & endure. #HearHim
This is the entire individual work of a mortal human being: to remember him. It’s in you, waiting to be discovered. We who have already remembered are under covenant to help others remember, because he loves them as infinitely as he loves each of us.

“The world in which we now live is moving rapidly away from the teachings of Christ in its laws & customs. As a result, Satan is working overtime to confuse God’s sons & daughters & to divert the very elect from fulfilling their duty & receiving the Lord’s blessings.” #Ballard
“Satan wants you to stop practicing good habits such as daily scripture study, praying daily, worthily partaking of the sacrament weekly, and giving genuine, heartfelt service. He also wants you to stand on the sidelines in today’s important and crucial battles.” #MRussellBallard
“Remember, we are at war—but not a war of guns and bullets. Nevertheless, the war is real, with countless human casualties. The war is in fact a continuation of the one that began in the premortal world.” #MRusselBallard 2015

“Above all, do not lie to yourself. A man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point where he does not discern any truth either in himself or anywhere around him, and thus falls into disrespect towards himself and others...” #Dostoyevsky
“Not respecting anyone, he ceases to love, and having no love, he gives himself up to passions and coarse pleasures in order to occupy and amuse himself, and in his vices reaches complete bestiality, and it all comes from lying continually to others and himself.” #Dostoyevsky
Why is self-deception a prominent feature in self-destruction? Because moral absolutes exist & are inborn to each person on earth—“It is given unto them to know good from evil; wherefore they are agents unto themselves” (Moses 6:56). We know. To excuse sin, we must lie.
