SenJesse Helms (R-NC) launched a notorious “ballot integrity” program in his ugly battle to keep his Senate seat in a race against the popular Black fmr Mayor of Charlotte, Harvey Gantt in 1990. Helms’ campaign was sued by the DOJ for these activities. apnews.com/article/52589f…
The myth of voter fraud has been advanced by lawyers Hans von Spakovsky & J. Christian Adam’s for 20 years. They managed to make their way into the DOJ under George W. Bush where they turned the idea of protecting voting rights on its head. theguardian.com/us-news/2020/o…

After states were freed from the preclearance requirements of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act by the Supreme Court’s decision in the Shelby case, the claims of fraud got wilder & the laws to protect against this myth proliferated - again targeting Black & Latino voters.
