Today our Director of Released Children’s Services is visiting the Carrizo Springs detention center along with members of Congress. We're currently providing the kids detained there with legal services.

As RAICES, we’ve been at the frontlines of this issue for many years.🧵👇🏽
Let us be clear: There is no “security crisis” or “surge” at the border. The situation we are facing is nothing new. Child migration and the numbers of kids we're seeing enter through the border is not unprecedented, unusual or surprising. Statistically this was very predictable.
The number of children coming into the US changes depending on the time of year.

This is normal. This is expected. This is something the government can prepare for.

As a country, we have two choices to address the humanitarian challenge we have in front of us.

We can build a system that terrorizes and dehumanizes people seeking asylum (including children), as Trump was doing to "send a message".
Or we step up to the challenge and build a system to welcome them. The answer should be a no-brainer.
Right now, what we ARE concerned about, is the constant use of Emergency Reception Centers.

Health and Human Services, who takes custody of unaccompanied children coming to the US, usually cannot abide by the standard of “protective environment” set by the law for these ERCs.
This means these detention facilities are unacceptable places to detain children.
What’s even more concerning, is that these centers, while technically under HHS, the CHILDREN inside them are being targeted for deportation by ICE.

It’s how our immigration system is set up. It’s set up to deport children.
We need to meet the current challenge we have in front of us in a way that honors the children’s human dignity.
The Biden administration must;

✅Ensure no child is detained in CBP custody;
✅Work towards immediately closing down all the influx centers & “decompression” facilities;
✅Allow families to reunite with children immediately and without fear of enforcement, or to coordinate for their rapid reunification by government-facilitated travel to their sponsors in the U.S.;
✅Treat kids as they would refugees and remove them from deportation proceedings.
In the long term, we must create the systems and infrastructure to welcome asylum seekers and ensure we are addressing the push factors that are displacing families and forcing people to leave their homes to seek home and safety in the U.S.
We at RAICES know who these children are and where they come from. We know their stories and we won’t stop until we as a country see them for who they are; human beings seeking a better life for them and their families.

🧵THREAD: TPS for Venezuelans

Any action to provide relief by the Biden admin is a welcome gesture that'll improve the lives of thousands of immigrants living in the U.S.

This shows us an admin willing to use Executive Action to provide relief to the immigrant community.
With this, we are aware that other countries are in dire need of TPS.

People from places such as Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala are unable to return, and require Executive relief as well.
And while TPS would be a huge boost to the lives of many immigrants, we must also seek permanent solutions for immigrants already in the U.S.

We demand that Congress take action immediately and provide permanent protection for TPS recipients.

To no surprise Operation Lone Star is Abbott's latest attack on the migrant community, an operation upholding racist rhetoric from the previous administration.

Abbott seems to be incapable of protecting Texans under a pandemic, yet highly skilled in criminalizing migrants. 🧵👇🏽
Under Operation Lone Star air, ground, marine and tactical border security units will be deployed to "high-threat areas for cartel activity and drug smuggling".

The data backing this increase of criminal activity seem to stem from Abbott claiming to know "cartel strategy".
Abbott's blatant hypocrisy of stalling efforts to approve federal funds for #COVID19 safety & lifting the mask mandate only supports the xenophobic characterization of immigrants as a risk to public health.

Which is what Title 42 is & what he's using to his political advantage.

A lot of folks may be celebrating the end of immigrant family detention centers.

We're here to tell you this simply isn't true.
sacurrent.com/the-daily/arch…
.@ICEgov is saying these facilities will simply become “3 day processing centers” for those given Notices to Appear (a charging doc initiating removal proceedings).

But we've been representing families inside of Karnes for years & can pretty much call BS on this.
For the past 3 years we’ve observed up close countless & frequent policy changes directly impacting the lives of people seeking safety, imprisoned by our gov't.

ICE can resume expedited removal & prolonged detention at any moment.

This is a glaring PR stunt by ICE.

There's a lot of talk & uncertainty around "Emergency Reception Centers" for children like Carrizo Springs & Homestead opening up again under the Biden Administration.

So let's walk through what all of this actually means for immigrant children at our border.

A thread 🧵⤵️
This move represents a chilling continuity of Trump's attitudes towards immigrants & reinforces the notion that immigrants—including unaccompanied children—are less than human & should be warehoused away from the general population instead of being reunited w/relatives in the US.
FACT: The facilities run by @HHSGov & the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) ARE better than those run by ICE or CBP.

CAVEAT: The Trump Admin showed us that the HHS/ORR system could be weaponized against immigrants.

Think family separation under the Zero Tolerance policy.

What's happening in Texas is criminal:
Food shortages. Unsafe drinking water. Impassable roads. Flooded homes. A humanitarian crisis like we’ve not seen before.

This is what's going on in immigrant detention centers in the midst of the #TexasFreeze & what you can do to help🧵👇🏾
We have 10 offices across the state and most of our 250+ staff members have been without power for much of the week.

Luckily, we've now been able to communicate with many of our clients & community members both in and out of detention centers.

But things are looking bleak.
Immigrants in detention centers are freezing cold and not able to get the word out about what’s going on inside these prisons.

Take Ubaldo's situation for example 👇🏾

For 4+ months, Ubaldo Ochoa has been held in an ICE detention center in Pearsall, TX while his son awaits his release.

Today, we received a call from him saying it's freezing inside the jail, yet nothing has been done to alleviate the cold 🥶 #FreeUbaldo remezcla.com/culture/young-…
We're unsure if there have been power outages in the detention center but if their heating is working, it's set very low.

Ubaldo told us they were asking the guards (with no luck) to lower the air from the vents bc it was making them colder.
In lieu of heating, his block hasn't received blankets or any type of warm clothes in order to weather the storm.

And to top things off, our status hearing was cancelled today because of court closures in the state.
