Where would a major #tsunami strike?

To help local emergency officials prepare, the #California Geological Survey has released new maps that show the extent of flooding the worst tsunamis could produce in #LosAngelesCounty.

latimes.com/projects/la-ts…
In a worst-case scenario -- an M9.3 underwater earthquake in Aleutian Trench off the Alaskan coastline -- a tsunami could hit SoCal hours later and flood parts of Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice, Marina del Rey, Long Beach & the nation’s two busiest ports.

latimes.com/projects/la-ts…
There are other possibilities for catastrophe.

Earthquakes along undersea faults near Catalina & Anacapa islands — plus submarine landslides off of the Palos Verdes Peninsula — could create tsunamis capable of flooding those same areas in just minutes.

latimes.com/projects/la-ts…
The maps are being released during #TsunamiPreparednessWeek, when coastal residents are reminded to get ready for disasters.

In the case of tsunamis, the recommended mode of evacuation is by foot, not automobile.

latimes.com/projects/la-ts…
In some ways, that worst-case scenario quake would be easy to respond to: There would be hours to evacuate after a warning was issued.

But there would be little to no time between an official warning and massive flooding for smaller offshore quakes.

latimes.com/projects/la-ts…
The new maps are revisions of earlier work that predicted the flooding from a 500-year flood.

The best preparation would be for people to check the maps, find an evacuation route, and practice it, said engineering geologist Nick Graehl.

A Times analysis of the changes since 2009 shows that Long Beach has the largest additions.

Also, roughly two dozen blocks along Beach Drive, an upscale area in Hermosa Beach, have been added.

On President's Day in the waters off of Manhattan Beach, a racist scuffle, now referred to as the "incident" exposed a dark side to the localism customs that dominate surfing.

It spurred a racial reckoning in the surfing world.

latimes.com/lifestyle/stor…
It started as a normal South Bay outing for Justin “Brick” Howze and Gage Crismond, two friends who have been regulars there since they started surfing together eight months ago.

But a traffic jam in the water ignited tensions.

As emotions climaxed, an older, white surfer inserted himself into the fray.

He called Brick the N-word repeatedly and violently splashed water in his face.

He called Gage a gay slur and told him to “go back to the streets.”
