.@PeteStauber’s response was to vote No & send me a letter that included lies about the bill which he also posted on his Facebook page prior to the vote. 2/x
Anyone who can Google can find a copy of #HR8. Here’s the part which says the requirement that private transfers must first go to a licensed dealer in order to conduct a background check does NOT apply to temporarily loaning guns to friends for hunting*. #FactCheck@WCCO 3/x
*(Unless, of course, the gun owner has reason to believe his lifelong friend is going to use the gun in a crime or is prohibited from possessing a firearm. Pretty sensible if you ask me.) 4/x
Which is why I was so surprised @RepPeteStauber made this uninformed statement (lie?). I’ve emailed & called his office multiple times to REeducate him on this portion of the bill so he can correct his public post, but like you, @WCCO, I’ve received no response from Stauber. 4/x
I say REeducate because a group of MN @MomsDemand volunteers met with him back in 2019 to ask him to support HR8 & we had to read him portions of the bill because he made incorrect statements about it then too. 5/x
I WAS graciously invited to call into one of his telephone townhalls so I could have a *chance* to ask him directly. (His townhalls are usually unannounced - you just get a call from his office on a random evening & hopefully you have an hour to listen in.) #SurpriseTownhalls 6/x
Unfortunately he had to cancel the townhall on 3/18/21 because he was busy on the House floor (#RepLife) so I still haven’t had the opportunity to let him know his reason for voting No on HR8 is not true. I’m sure he’ll want to reassure his constituents when he finds out. 7/x
So @WCCO, if @RepPeteStauber calls you back first, will you let him know there are reasonable exclusions built into HR8 that his constituents will appreciate? If he calls me back, I’ll tell him you are trying to reach him. @MomsDemand#MNLeg#MoreThanThoughtsAndPrayers
