This looks like terrible policing from Avon and Somerset Police. I've seen no reports of violence until 10pm, when the police pointlessly try to close down the protest. news.sky.com/story/bristol-…
The videos of their behaviour are extremely aggressive and violent And given the fabrications about injuries last week, we now can't trust what they report.
And of course, because everything on this website can only be black and white, people are now acting like this somehow negates what happened last week. Maybe they want to explain what can justify people setting fire to a police van.
There really has to a better standard of argument than 'we're fighting fascism' on the one hand and 'police can do what they like' on the other. You can try to exercise independent judgement, rather than knee-jerk tribal loyalty.

This Johnson quote brought something home to me. If he was still a backbencher & someone else was PM, what would he have been doing? Quite obviously he would have been a CRG type, saying we were treading on ancient English liberties and it was all rather hysterical. Image
It would have been the best way to get attention for himself. But more importantly it clearly chimes with his instinct. As it is, he's the PM, so he sat in rooms with experts being told how many people would die and implemented lockdown.
But he always did that late. Late for the first lockdown, late for the second, late for the third. And the cost of that was tens of thousands of lives.

I'm obviously sick - to fucking death - of festivals/conventions taking place online. But given that they must, I love the way Borderlines is doing it: screening a film at a set time so you're watching it at same moment as everyone else.

Kicks off this weekend with a bucket-load of films I'm keen to see: The Father, Ammonite, Stray and The 8th.
The Father did a real number on me. It's gripping, funny, beautifully acted, impeccably directed, masterfully written. But most importantly, it's empathetic.

Most of those claiming to be liberal critics of lockdown clearly have no idea what liberalism is.
Not all, of course. There are plenty who have raised issues with elements of the powers - the slovenly way they were written, the late publication, the heavy handedness approach to protests etc. But it is a minority.
Liberalism is not Aleister Crowley. Do what thou wilt is not the full extent of the law. It's a project for expanding the freedom of the individual which recognises the notion of competing rights.

Amid all the triumphalism over vaccines, we still haven't done what needed to be done to ensure there isn't another lockdown: closing the border.
Experts have been pointing this out for months now, utterly flabbergasted. Other countries did this even though they were landlocked and the border went through towns. We have the advantage of geography and still failed.
Maybe we'll be ok. And maybe we fucking won't. But with the vaccine roll out we had the opportunity to at least guarantee we'd be free inside the country. Instead we left our fate up to chance.

Working out using VR. Jesus Christ. You finish and think: how can something so much fun be good for you?
I think what I'm experiencing now is what sporty people always kept talking about. Actual enjoyment through exertion. You just needed to turn it into a nerd thing and I could finally get into it
When this shit takes off there's suddenly going to be a lot of fucking RIPPED nerds out there, bulking up because it's the only way to get to the next level. The world will never be the same.

I've started watching all the (decent) Spielberg films. Began last night with Duel, which is fucking mad. Jaws with a truck. It's some taut, stripped down, no-nonsense, white knuckle shit.
It starts and you think: he can't possibly sustain this over the course of a whole film can he? But he can. He so can.
Jaws. It is perfect. Flawless. Not one thing about it could be changed@ not one sound, one line, one shot, one tiny element of the performances. Nothing. There is, quite literally, nothing wrong with it.
