1/n Thread for @VerdaVerum and @DoorEmby, on #pottery, and how one can tell the video (found on net, source unknown) is spliced together from three different videos, & creates a very fake, misleading conclusion.
2/n First: how to make something like the still below from the video? Cover a leaf in the wet glaze desired, the color in the video below being yellow/gold, wait for it to dry, place it carefully inside the bowl which has already been glazed with its own glaze, fire it in kiln.
3/n If feeling fancy, you could lay the leaf at the bottom of the bowl, then glaze the whole bowl. The leaf will burn away in the kiln, leaving a structural shape of the leaf, maybe expose a bit of the original stoneware. Point is, several ways to do it

4/n How to tell the below **drama** is only that, and a completely false impression.
a/ That leaf won't leave a gold glaze. It's going to burn away, leaving at the most some structural form, maybe some black marks too from carbon.
b/ That water? Great way to maim yourself
5/n Start with the pure drama. Pouring water into a piece fresh out of the kiln? If earthenware, it'd probably split. If it was glassware, it would explode, maybe kill you with a large shard of glass shrapnel at 500°C (900°F). It's stoneware, so you can get away with it, but...
6/n Slipping the leaf in like that into the hot piece? Only maybe spoil the original glaze, maybe leave slip-marks, & burn away, leaving nothing much behind except a bit of carbon. IOW, crap. Not at all how the bowl in the last still was actually made.

7/n Take a look at your Navajo pottery in AZ, NM, UT. They like using horsehair, tie or stick some strands in the glaze around the pottery, fire the pottery in the kiln, the horsehair burns away, leaves behind interesting structure. Used in raku & bisque

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse_hai…
8/n The technique shown in the video (NOT including the water bit, or the bit with the fake crap adding the leaf with no additional glaze *after* firing) of stoneware is descended from Jizhou (吉州窯), now Jian ware (建窯) or Tenmoku (天目), all forms of stoneware.
9/ Try as I might, I have NOT found any technique of pottery where rapid quenching (e.g. pouring in water) is actually a thing. Even crackle-glaze is not made this way; it's simply too risky; it would not only crack the glaze, but also shatter the piece

spinningpots.com/how-to-make-cr…
10/ Rapid quenching is something you do with metal, NEVER with glass (if you value your life & the workpiece), never with earthernware (shatters the workpiece), and AFAIK never with stoneware, even when thin.

cc. @Pottedhistory for perhaps any additional comments.

That's actually a very pertinent point. Helmut Kohl was THE reunification Chancellor, but then he threw it all away through scandals. Gerhard Schröder was the reform Chancellor, but too Russia-friendly by half. Merkel has done a very reasonable job, throughout many crises
While I strongly disagreed with some of her decisions, there was that fillip of sheer irony of the time when Angela Merkel was too Christian for @DouthatNYT.

Easily. In some ways, Germany could have done much better against #COVID19 (state/federal fights haven't helped). But in a LOT of ways, no mentioning names, Germany could have done FAR worse. Merkel deserves a lot of the credit for that

Just a few words about myself, since many of you are new to me. I have my own standards of judgment and conduct. Most of the time, I try to stay polite. Sometimes I don't. There are reasons for that.
If I judge you are being deliberately dishonest, I will act and speak accordingly. Since the pandemic began, end of February, there have been a million trolls, pretend-'sceptics', sociopaths, and, well, just plain gormless idiots. Some of them are all of those things.
Today, 1 in every 50 British people is infected with COVID19. So what, you say, that's 'only' 2%. Welcome to the world of:
a/ exponential growth.
b/ low number of ICU beds with enough real ICU staff.
Give you one guess what that combination means.

Yes, I can, you ignoramus by choice. Flu has an R0 lower than #COVID19; early days yet, but it seems the measures against COVID_19 have worked even better against the flu. As for "pneumonia", lol, you're aware that COVID_19 causes pneumonia too? Plus opportunistic bacteria? Etc.?
Because greater social distancing, more use of face-masks. However, complacency may cause the #COVID19 epidemic to take off in Japan too this winter.

You could have very easily looked up all this all by yourself.
LOL! @ClarkeMicah has at every step of the way downplayed the pandemic, promoted utter cranks, and just played silly buggers from April 2020 onwards. That wasn't an insult, it was a description.
Get over yourself.

OK. CNN News now saying Trump's Twitter account locked for the next 12 hours. Several tweets on it also now deleted. CNN also saying the White House has called a "lid", i.e. no announcements from the WH for a while.
Other sources quoting Pelosi as saying certification (of the POTUS election results) will proceed at 8pm, presumably US East Coast time, so still on the same day. At least one Republican senator seems to have withdrawn his objections.

Listening to Biden live, speaking (on CNN). He's being eminently sensible, and measured in tone. He strikes a good line.

I easily remember all the Trumpalos and that demented grifter, @LLinWood, attacking the Georgia GOP, their two candidates, and so on. You sowed the grifters, you reap the whirlwind of being powerless from now on. You turned defeat into catastrophe

Republican. At least one more adult. The drama-queens storming the Capitol have zero idea of how real institional power works, in a large nation. The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine, as the drama-queens will find out.

At this stage, no amount of dishonesty, gaslighting & smokescreen will save you, @FiveRights and @JamesDelingpole (who just retweeted this). Get a grip. There will be arrests, arrest sheets, concrete details, for all time.

As for you, @KathyConWom, you're British, you're supposed to be an adult, you're supposed to be politically experienced. To tweet this out tonight might strike you as a master-stroke of snobbery. It isn't. In context, it makes you look enormously stupid.

Image
oh for heaven's sake. @JamesDelingpole, idiot of a prat of a Brit, has just retweeted @LLinWood, grifter extraordinaire, total flake, and delusionmonger. There will be arrest records. ID checks. There's no way to lie out of this one. Image
