1. Salutation is very important.

Resist the temptation to use Dear Honorable Prof Agbajeola.

2. Introduce yourself and explain why you are writing!

Keep it simple and precise.

X- I am Olumuyiwa from Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State, Nigeria...Not necessary biko(remember your introduction is like a romantic scent to attract your potential partner).
3. Talk about what attracted you to their lab/group.

Do not be generic here!!

It's important to read one or two publications from the group and ask questions.... I know 70% japa won't do this and this accounts for a lot of those unreplied emails since they lack direction

When I wrote about mail tracker here couple of weeks ago, it was from a particular scenario, a graduate school applicant recently wrote a Professor for funding and he didn't reply.

The applicant was frustrated and angry because he got the notification that the said Prof read it
See, let me be frank with you, a Professor receives an average of 20 emails per week seeking for MS/PhD positions. The onus is on him/her to reply you.

If you have funding, why not go to the UK-very easy at that!

Mail tracker for someone like me is even a turn off.
If I would review your CV and email within my 8-6pm lab activities, 14days is always my deal to get it back to you. So, calm down and use every resources we have here for your growth!!
