The third witness of the day is Donald Williams, who has a place about a block away from Cup Foods. Williams has worked in private security for several years, from being bouncer to providing security for celebrities.
Assistant Attorney General Matthew Frank is questioning Williams about martial arts background and experience working alongside MPD officers both when officers respond to an incident and when they work security while off-duty.
Williams was also a wrestler, now teaches the sport.
Judge Cahill previously ruled Williams can talk about his training & experience in martial arts, what he saw on May 25 but cannot give opinion about whether maneuvers he saw May 25 were cause of death.
Frank asks whether he has ever been rendered unconscious from a choke hold, Williams says yes and explains how they train on choke holds.
Williams says he drove to Cup Foods on May 25 to get something to drink but never made it inside, says he heard some of what was going on and decided not to enter.
Frank showing this clip, Williams is wearing black sweatshirt. He says he walked over near bus stop.
Williams tells Frank he saw #GeorgeFloyd on the ground, "pretty much pleading for his life".
Williams tells Frank he tried to stay on the curb, describes Thao controlling the crowd and #GeorgeFloyd "speaking in a distressed way".
Williams describes seeing #GeorgeFloyd "fade away.. he was going through distress because of the knee".
Frank, "Did you notice anything about his breathing..?"
Williams, "Just like MMA, you can tell when someone gets tired.. his breathing was getting tremendously heavy..."
Williams describes asking for the former officers to check #GeorgeFloyd's pulse.
Frank, "Did you draw on your training and experience.. to get an idea of what this officer was doing physically?"
Williams describes position of the knee and calls it a "blood choke".
#DerekChauvin stands up and is identified by Williams. This comes after Williams described making eye contact with Chauvin on the scene.
Frank is showing a piece of the bystander video, exhibit 15, and is having Williams describe his impression of the technique Chauvin used to restrain #GeorgeFloyd.
Williams says, "Every time his knee is moving it's pushing that pressure down on his neck".
Judge Cahill now instructing Williams that he can speak to what he observed but cannot talk about his conclusions.
Again, this goes back to motions ruling limiting what Williams can say in his testimony- he cannot speak to whether what he saw caused #Floyd's death.
Another pause as Judge Cahill addresses the technical issue a couple of minutes ago that interrupted the video feed.
Judge Cahill, "Members of the jury we had a major technical glitch" and sends them home. Williams will continue testimony tomorrow.

As they bring Floyd to the squad, you can hear Floyd say "I am claustrophobic for real, Mr. Officer", tell them he's scared. One of the officers offers to crack a window.
Lt. Rugel, "As of now every sworn employee has a body worn camera", says his department is the primary point of contact for their BWC vendor.
Schleicher asks for summary of BWC policy
Lt. Rugel, "It requires officers working in uniform, always wear their body worn camera. That they have it on in a standby mode whenever they're working and that they activate and record video when they're responding to a call..."
Lt. Rugel is explaining how cameras are linked to officers and case.
Lt. Rugel says, "Depending on the type of video, the minimum retention is a year", for any evidence it's 7 years, for significant incidents it could be kept indefinitely.
McMillian describes seeing the former officers bringing Floyd over to the squad outside of Cup Foods.
Eldridge, "Was he still handcuffed at that point?"
McMillian, "Yes Ma'am"
We're seeing surveillance/body camera video now which shows McMillian, wearing black shirt, talking to Floyd as officers tried to get him in the vehicle.
McMillain can be heard telling Floyd "You can't win".
He explains to Eldridge, "Because I have had interactions with officers myself and I understand ... you can't win."
Next witness is Christopher Belfrey, who says he’s lived in south Minneapolis for about 3 years.
He went to Cup Foods on May 25, 2020.
Belfrey parked behind an SUV across the street from the Cup Foods.
Frank, “Did you see something that drew your attention?”
Belfrey, “Two officers were coming across the street.. they approached the vehicle in front of me”, describes officer drawing handgun, “it startled me”.
Belfrey says “I didn’t know exactly what was going on” so he moved his car across the street.
We are about to see video he filmed before moving his vehicle.
