An exclusive statement from Maharan, a member of ‘Ondriyam Ondrin’, a diaspora organisation involved in the protests in Germany.

“I am a member of an organisation called ‘Ondriyam Ondrin’. We work for the welfare of Eelam Tamils back home and across the world. Image
“The German Internal Affairs has taken a decision to deport individuals whose refugee asylum claims have been refused by Germany.
There are at lest 80 Eelam Tamils who have been arrested, and are scheduled to be deported back to Sri Lanka via private jets on 30/03/2021.”
Many German Tamil citizens as well as non-Tamil speaking citizens of Germany have come together in Berlin, Büren and Düsseldorf to protest this deportation.
The protestors highlighted that human rights violations as well as enforced disappearances are still occurring in Sri Lanka, and that deporting the 80+ Eelam Tamils to Sri Lanka would place their lives in significant danger.
Although the protestors have received support from various German political parties, the legal aspects of this decision have made it difficult to be reversed. Hence the protestors are directing their demands directly to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to stop the deportation.
Eelam Tamils gathered in Berlin today to submit a petition to the Home Ministry to stop the deportation.
It is to be noted that the means by which these arrests were carried out by the police has been widely criticized. At a time in which the world suffers from the effects of COVID-19, the humanity of Germany has been called into question by society and human rights activists alike”

President Rajapaksa has claimed that Sri Lanka will not pander to the geopolitics of global powers by supporting the devolution to the Provincial Councils. Gotabaya Rajapaksa believes that power devolution is being used by global powers to push for separatism. Image
“We will not be a victim of big power rivalry in the Indian Ocean” Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The 13th Amendment passed in 1987, created the Provincial Councils, which assured that all 9 provinces on the island had the right to self-govern.

Although due to the overriding powers given to the President, the Provincial provisions relating to policing and land have never been implemented in the provinces that form part of the Tamil homeland.
