Everest is overrun and filthy as there are no formal scheme for disposing of empty oxygen canisters, abandoned tents and human waste at higher altitudes
Swiss luxury brand @Bally launched Bally Peak Outlook, an initiative to help preserve the world's most extreme mountains and environments, in partnership with local Sherpas in 2019
The initiative is led by Dawa Steven Sherpa, a Nepali climber, environmental activist and tourism entrepreneur, who has led expeditions to remove mountain garbage since 2008
The latest phase of the project is focusing on spring cleaning Nepal's eight highest mountains.
A team of 12 Nepalese climbers led by Dawa set off to clean up the base camps of four of the mountains including Everest on 9 September 2020. The expedition lasted 47 days
Travelling from West to East, Dawa's expedition team, about half ethnic Sherpa, removed 2.2 tons of rubbish from:
⛰️ Cho Oyu
⛰️ Everest
⛰️ Lhotse
⛰️ Makalu
🦶 The human footprint
"The vodka bottles that we found had not been accidentally dropped, but intentionally buried in a hole in the mountain"
🌲 The resilience of nature
"Between Everest and Makalu, we were walking where no one had walked for over a year, and we got lost. The path had grown over. It was like nature reminding us that it only takes one year to remove the trace of human trails"
