1/ While the end of @benyt's piece on Harper's scratches the surface of the insane, persistent dysfunction and inequity that powers that place for decades, the top feels crafted by the unnamed spokesperson (GM) and Rick. nytimes.com/2021/03/28/bus…
2/ Harper's operates like a cult, one that swears even those who leave to some kind oath of silence, in part because they were complicit in the way that staff are underpaid and treated. It takes *decades* for many to wake up.
3/ The fact that no former editors or very senior editorial staff is on record in this piece is telling. Ben's a great reporter, so I'm sure he asked...some of them. Anyway i'd just like to call absolute bullshit on this:
Have spent a not inconsiderable about of time over the last few years trying to discern the divide between those who care deeply about (any!) superhero movie and those who are like, ok that was fun (or not). 1/?
Leans (dramatically?) male and skews (somewhat less dramatically, maybe ) younger, but the real thing I don’t get is the predominance among male political journos which at times seems totally off the charts? Kthnxbai
And I just don’t know what to make of the pairing of political/analytical journalism and extreme, not-just-escapism, fandom of superhero movies; these things would seem to be in at least some opposition.
with infinite ways to ping people, how does anyone track/sort (much less reply to) all the inbounds? It's crazy making.
Also this just seems like @SlackHQ setting itself up for endless stories about how its platform is used to sexually and racially harass people and...we have platforms for that.
1/ SF's Unidos en Salud—grassroots Latino activists + UCSF docs—was quick to ID racial disparities, provide testing, food banks, and so helped—maybe more than any other factor—keep the city's COVID rates low. Must read piece by @moatman and @julia_luriemotherjones.com/politics/2021/…
2/ I live around the corner from the food bank operation that Unidos ed Salud and the Carnaval operation runs a few times a week. It is truly epic in scope, helping so many stay fed this year. motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
3/ The approach of Unidos en Salud, using trusted community members, supplying wrap-around services has also meant that the Latino population of the Mission/greater SF is far *more* likely to embrace vaccines than national averages. motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
