My shock and dismay is is echoed by thousands who are reeling in fear of our civilization’s future if this gets implemented.
This curriculum will negate the gains made by indigenous peoples, women, LGBTQ, immigrants & POC in one fell swoop.
The curriculum completely removes the experiences, successes and struggles of a large portion of the public and replaces it with a whitewashed rosy view of male patriarchal hierarchy backed by Protestant church dogma.
I started school at Parkdale Elementary/Junior High in 1973. The school used Dick and Jane books to learn to read. Dick and Jane were the whitest white kids I’d ever seen.
Thank god I already knew how to read.
This curriculum is far worse.
Elementary education curriculum research has come a long way since 1973.
This curriculum erases any of those gains. Far worse than Dick and Jane learn to read series, this curriculum seeks to erase contemporary culture and revert to a homogenous mythical past.
Children and parents knew in 1973 that Dick and Jane represented what was expected. That we didn’t measure up to the expectation was bad enough.
What this curriculum does is erase the gains made in cultural diversity and tolerance since 1973.
When I was exposed to those books they were on their way out. But they were written about 50 years prior to my first year in school. The cultural and social norms they portrayed were already antiquated by the time I saw them.
Teachers and students knew the books were “old fashioned” when they were being used in 1973.
The curriculum changes proposed represent the cultural and social norms of the Gilded Age. But the cultural and social expectations they propose are being represented as contemporary.
This is indoctrination. The provincial government is attempting to indoctrinate students with cultural and social norms and expectations in a curriculum that is a century old. If not older.
The curriculum is similar to classical education that was offered in schools a century ago. It’s also used by Christian Homeschoolers contemporaneously.
This movement was described 51 years ago in this article. But it reads like the article was written yesterday.
Ponder that for a moment. This movement has been operating for at least 51 years. Millions of evangelicals receiving weekly instruction to install God’s Kingdom.
Kenney is 52 years old. He’s been immersed in evangelical Dominionism his entire life. Most of the UCP MLAs have been as well.
The curriculum rewrite is an attempt at society wide indoctrination of the Dominionist political agenda on our children.
Evangelicals have known for awhile that the secret to life long fundamentalist beliefs is to teach them to children as early as possible.
By the time they reach adulthood, their minds are closed to any other options.
That’s the foundations behind this curriculum.
I know the word fascism scares people. Immediately it conjures up Nazis and the epitome of evil.
Fascism is a set of behaviours. Nazis were one example.
UCP and modern Canadian Dominionist Christian conservatism is another.
UCP are NOT Nazis. (Maybe some are, but that’s not what fascism means).
But UCP are clearly using fascist policies to reshape Albertan society to reflect their ideology, beliefs and Christian values as informed by the Dominionist agenda.
Alberta
WE NEED TO STOP FASCISM FROM ADVANCING NOW!

Corporal punishment was restricted to a switch no larger than the size of your index finger. Women and children could be beat to within an inch of life, and it was entirely legal. Dogs and horses could be beaten as well.
Wealthy heads of households could abuse their servants.
Female Servants didn’t dare complain or they wouldn’t be paid their meagre below subsistence wages. Or maybe they’d be denied food for a few days. Forced to sleep with the animals. Beaten and raped instead of just raped.
It’s the first time I have felt defeated and awash in grief for reconciliation.
I’m certain many other indigenous people feel similarly.
What was once a dream of equal personhood has been replaced with fear and woe for what’s to come.
I see people criticizing the new proposed curriculum. Strong, well thought out arguments why this curriculum is so troublesome and devastating for BIPOC, LGBTQ and Women in general.
But my tears and sorrow know this is where it will end.
I’ve watched for the last few years how so many good intentioned people accept the policies of governments that cause great harm and actually kill innocent vulnerable people (spiritually, emotionally and physically).
It is not your revenue. While you contribute to the overall accumulation, assuming you pay income and property taxes, the revenue collected is public assets. Meaning it is no longer attached to individuals, but is purposed for common gain.
No individual directs the spending of that revenue.
This is a common misunderstanding used by those who don’t comprehend the difference between individualism and commons.
Like when an person tells a bureaucrat that they pay their salary so therefore they are bureaucrat’s boss.
That’s not how it works. Each citizen forfeits any claim to the money they pay as taxes. It’s no longer theirs, but belongs to the state. Regardless of the social status of the individual who pays tax, the money no longer belongs to them.
What gives people who call themselves inclusive the idea that blocking someone who shares the same policy goals as socialist, but has a completely different worldview than the 20% of the population digs in their heels over any change.
We can’t exterminate the far right. We have to live together. Plurality means learning to live amongst people who don’t share your values. It means learning how to agree to disagree. I have no fondness for conservatives. Centrism is not the problem. A divided electorate is.
The more we focus on our differences, the deeper we drive the wedge between ourselves.
Why are socialists unable to process what plurality and diversity means? Why is this concept so hard for lefties to understand?
What makes socialists believe only they have the answer?
